'Cats end season on 83-77 OT win over Eagles

3/6/2020 9:59:00 PM | Women's Basketball

OGDEN – Weber State women's basketball ended the season on a positive note. WSU went into overtime and came away with an 83-77 victory on senior night.

What head coach Velaida Harris said: "Well, we made it exciting for the fans. We had a great crowd come out tonight. I'm proud of our kids. We came out guns blazing. It's something I knew we could do, we just hadn't put it together yet. Our efforts were impressive. We had 11 assists in the first half and it's been a long time since that happened. In the second half our kids got scared and they weren't used to being in that position. I called that early timeout and I reminded them we were supposed to be in that position. Being ahead by that much is the position we want to be in. Everyone on the team contributed tonight. I could go on and on about our effort. I was proud that when Eastern Washington started making their run, we kept hitting them back. I'm excited because, no we didn't win the number of games we wanted to this year but our freshman got a lot of experience. We have strong people coming back with leadership and I'm excited for the future. It's great to see so much finally come together tonight".

How it happened: Weber State started the game out strong. WSU fell behind 8-2 early but came back and tied it 8-8 and pushed on for a 22-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Wildcats put together a big 11-0 run. That big run allowed Weber State to control the momentum and push on for a 20 point lead. As the first half came to an end, WSU had a 45-28 lead.

EWU started the second half with a 6-0 run. The Eagles went on to cut WSU's lead to just three points. The Wildcats were able to finish out the third quarter strong and maintained a 61-55 lead. EWU did outscore WSU 27-12 in the third quarter.

With three minutes left in the game, the Eagles overtook the Wildcats and took the lead back for the first time since the first quarter. With just under two minutes remaining in the game, a mae layup by Shyanne Loiland tied the game up at 70-70.

The game remained tied just at 72-72 as the regulation buzzer rang sending the game into overtime.

Weber State didn't let the slow second half drag them down. WSU went on to outscore EWU 11-5 in the overtime period to take an 83-77 victory.
