OGDEN - The Wildcats lost their Homecoming cat fight with the Bobcats as Montana State knocked off Weber State with a 13-7 win late Friday night at Stewart Stadium.Â
The 18th ranked Wildcats opened the game with a nine play, 97-yard drive in the first 4:21 of the game, capped by a nine-yard touchdown run from Josh Davis. But the Wildcats never scored again.Â
No. 9 Montana State tied the game up with a long drive late in the first quarter, then added two field goals in the third quarter for all of the scoring.Â
The Bobcats forced two Weber State turnovers and the Wildcats did not recover a turnover and MSU recorded four sacks on the night.Â
Weber State totaled 269 yards of offense, compared to 222 for Montana State. The Wildcats had 215 yards passing but just 54 yards rushing.Â
WSU was just 2 of 13 on third down conversions and was 0 for 3 on fourth down attempts. MSU was 1 of 14 on third down attempts.Â
"This game came down to being not as good as we need to be offensively," said WSU head coach Jay Hill. "I thought the defense played phenomenal. The offense looked great the first drive but didn't do anything after that. We had great starting field position, we have to do something with it. We got some things to clean up and be more effective."
On defense, Mitchel Maxfield had a career-high eight tackles to lead the Wildcats and had a half a sack, along with Doug Schiess. George Tarlas had seven tackles and a sack, and 1.5 tackles for loss. Eddie Heckard also added seven tackles.Â
Freshman quarterback Bronson Barron returned to the lineup after missing the last three games with injury, and was 16 of 29 passing for 215 yards on the night. Ty MacPherson led eight different Wildcats that caught passes with five receptions for 95 yards. Rashid Shaheed had four catches for 34 yards.Â
Josh Davis had 13 carries for 53 yards and the lone touchdown before leaving the game with an ankle injury.Â
The loss dropped Weber State to 2-4 on the season and 1-2 in Big Sky play and the 'Cats are 0-3 at home this season.Â
