Jay Hill becomes Weber State's all-time winningest coach with 54 career wins.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak and made history for head coach Jay Hill.Â
How it happenedÂ
The 18th ranked Wildcats scored on the opening drive, going 79-yards in the first five minutes, capped by a Kylan Weisser 1-yard TD run. After a Wildcat defensive stop, Cal Poly forced a Wildcat fumble, then scored on the ensuing drive to tie the game 7-7 with 2:05 left in the first quarter.Â
But then it was all Wildcats. Weber State scored 21 points in the second quarter. Weisser had another touchdown run of four yards to make it 14-7. Then Weisser connected with Dave Jones for an 18-yard touchdown to make it 21-7 with 8:19 to play in the second quarter.Â
In the closing seconds of the first half, Winston Reid sacked the Cal Poly quarterback and forced a fumble, which B.J. Taaufalele recovered and returned two yards for a touchdown that gave Weber State a 28-7 halftime lead.Â
The fireworks show at halftime didn't stop the Wildcats who scored on their first possession of the second half when Weisser hit Ty MacPherson for a 17-yard touchdown to make it 35-7.Â
A 25-yard field goal by Kyle Thompson gave Weber State a 38-7 lead after three quarters and neither team scored in the fourth quarter. Â
Numbers to know
The Wildcats dominated the total yards, finishing with 363 yards of total offense and held the Mustangs to just 115 yards. Cal Poly had 188 yards passing and 31 yards rushing, while Weber State threw for 188 yards and had 176 yards on the ground.Â
The Wildcat defense had seven sacks and forced two turnovers. Conner Mortensen led the way with five tackles.
Weisser threw for 143 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 27 yards and two more touchdowns before leaving the game with a foot injury in the third quarter.Â
Josh Davis had 11 carries for 57 yards and Dontae McMillan added 49 yards. Rashid Shaheed had one catch for 50 yards. A total of 12 different Wildcats recorded at least one reception.Â
