Wildcats selected first in media and coaches polls for 2021 season.
The defending champs are picked to win again. The Weber State football team, winners of four straight Big Sky titles, has been selected as the preseason favorite for the 2021 season.Â
The Wildcats were picked first in the media and coaches polls, announced Monday morning at the Big Sky Kickoff in Spokane, Washington. The Wildcats were picked first in the polls prior to the 2020 season, for the first time in school history.Â
Weber State received seven first-place votes in the coaches poll to finish first and picked up 14 first-place votes in the media poll. Montana was second in both polls, followed by Eastern Washington, Montana State, Sacramento State and UC Davis.Â
"It's always an honor to be picked first," said WSU head coach Jay Hill, the spring 2021 Big Sky Coach of the Year. "I think it has more to do with what the last four teams have done than this team. I never put a lot of stock in the preseason rankings because it will be decided on the field but it is an honor to get the respect."
The Wildcats have won four straight Big Sky titles, including an outright championship during the spring 2021 season. WSU has also advanced to the FCS Playoffs in five straight seasons.Â
Coach Hill returns for his eighth season as head coach and the Wildcats return four All-Americans and 13 Big Sky All-Conference players off last year's team.Â
The 2021 season begins on September 2 at Utah with the home opener set for September 18 against FCS powerhouse James Madison. The Big Sky season begins on September 25 at home against UC Davis.Â
WSU also hosts Montana State, Portland State and Northern Colorado in Big Sky play and has road games at Cal Poly, Eastern Washington, Idaho State and Southern Utah.Â
Season tickets for Wildcat football are on sale now.Â
