Weber State Volleyball Makes History En Route To Winning Northern Utah Classic

 The Weber State Wildcat Volleyball team opened their season in the Northern Utah Classic by hosting the Seton Hall Pirates and North Dakota Fighting Hawks, then rounding out the weekend by heading north to face the Utah State Aggies. The defending Big Sky champions went 3-0 on the weekend, sweeping their first two opponents and closed their opening weekend with a five-set victory over the USU to win the Northern Utah Classic.
The Wildcats' all-conference performers picked up right where they left off in the 2021 spring season, delivering clutch performances to help WSU pick up the wins.
Against Seton Hall, Dani Nay had one of the best serving performances in WSU history and had seven service aces, while Weber State's all-time leader in assists, Ashlyn Power, did a phenomenal job of spreading the ball around and tallying 39 assists on the day. Emma Mangum led the team with 14 kills while Sam Schiess and Rylin Adams tacked on 10 kills of their own as Weber State cruised to a 3-0 victory over the Pirates and set a school record for longest home win streak at 17, their last loss coming in the 2019 season.
On Saturday morning Weber State hosted their old conference rival North Dakota, a team that the Wildcats had never beaten previously.
That history would be rewritten after three sets in Swenson Gym.
The Wildcats got off to a slow start in the first set, but afterwards things picked up and the WSU offense got rolling. Adams and Schiess were both in double figures in kills, Nay added 10 kills and 13 digs for the double-double, and Power collected 28 assists as the 'Cats got their second victory of the season.
That evening the team bussed up to Logan for an in-state matchup against Utah State, a series in which Weber State had won the prior two meetings.
It was a knock-down-drag-out kind of match, with both teams seemingly delivering knock out blows at times, but Weber State would end up victorious in the fifth set.
Adams led the squad with 23 kills and had a blistering .321 attack percentage from the left pin. With 15 kills and 13 digs, Nay got her second double-double of the day, and WSU closed out the weekend with their third straight win over Utah State, and the Northern Utah Classic trophy.
After the match with the Aggies, head coach Jeremiah Larsen mentioned, "We got better every single day of the tournament, so we're fired up about that." He continued to say, "Rylin Adams had an incredible tournament…I thought we served the ball well. Utah State is a really good volleyball team so beating them is a huge deal for us."
The undefeated Wildcats will be back in Ogden for a few days before they head to Provo, Utah for a Thursday-Saturday tournament at BYU. Weber State will play the Cougars on September 2nd, Michigan State on the 3rd, and Dixie State on the 4th.
WSU's next home game will be on September 8th when Utah Valley comes to town. That game will be the ring and banner ceremony celebrating 2021 spring season in which the Wildcats won the Big Sky Conference tournament and won the first NCAA tournament game in school history.
