Wildcats Outlast Wolverines in Five Sets, Notch Another In-State Win

9/8/2021 9:04:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

On a night with a ring ceremony and banner unveiling celebrating the 2020-21 Big Sky Conference championship, the Weber State Wildcats and Utah Valley Wolverines provided the fireworks in a five-set thriller that the 'Cats won 3-2 (26-24, 16-25, 22-25, 25-19, 15-11) and improved to 5-2 this season.

Weber State came out on fire in the first set and jumped out to a big lead, but UVU responded, and things would go back and forth in a stanza that saw eight ties and four lead changes. The Wildcats ended up squeaking out of the deuce set 26-24.

In the second, the tables turned and UVU dominated the latter parts of the set, taking an easy 25-16 set victory and tying the match at one.

The third set seemed to be a knock down drag out affair, in which there were 13 ties and 10 lead changes between the two squads, but UVU finalized things with a 25-22 score. The Wolverines outhit the Wildcats with a blistering .333 attack percentage compared to .159 for Weber State.

With their backs against the wall, the 'Cats came out scratching and clawing in the fourth set and controlled things from the start. Behind some excellent serving and a rejuvenated block, WSU established control early in the fourth and extended the match after winning the set 25-19.

The fifth and deciding set seemed to be one where the Wildcats saw it all come together. The serve was on, the offense was clicking, and the defense was stifling, and Weber State got a lead that it wouldn't relinquish, closing the match with a 15-11 set victory and sending the enormous, vocal, white-clad Swenson Gym crowd into a frenzy.

The Wildcats' pin hitters put on a show today, with Rylin Adams leading the team with 17 kills and Dani Nay getting another double-double with 15 kills, 15 assists, and another four service aces. Middle blocker Sam Schiess once again provided her setters with a quick option in the middle and swung for 12 kills on a .381 attack percentage. Senior setter Ashlyn Power led all players with 34 assists and had 12 digs for another double-double.

This was the third time this season that the Wildcats have gone to five sets against in-state opponents, the other two being at Utah State and at BYU. Weber State now has a 2-1 record this season in matches that are extended to five sets.

Following the match, head coach Jeremiah Larsen said, "I'm proud of how we responded to our lackluster beginning. We probably shouldn't have won that game, but we grinded it out regardless."

Larsen's team will make the short drive south to Salt Lake City tomorrow to take on the 20th ranked Utah Utes. The match will be at 7:00 in the Huntsman Center.

WSU returns home on Thursday, September 23rd when they open Big Sky Conference play against the Portland State Vikings. That match will be at 6:00 in the Swenson Gym, tickets can be purchased online or by calling Weber State's ticket office at 801-626-8500. All Big Sky Conference matches can be watched on ESPN+.
