OGDEN, Utah – Weber State women's basketball and Head Coach Velaida Harris are thrilled to announce the signing of two new players to the Wildcat program for its 2023 recruiting class.
Weber State prides itself on finding and recruiting the right kind of person. Any and all signings in this class and in future classes are expected to help build what the program is doing on the floor, in addition to building the Weber State and Ogden communities.
The Wildcats, a group whose improvement and upward trajectory are undeniable, feel like they've found some perimeter scoring with their incoming class and are also excited to see how this class will impact the defensive end of the program. The hope is that this recruiting class will be able to take Weber State to another level offensively and add to the high character of the program as well.
CHEYANNE KEMP
Hometown: Morrilton, AR
High School: Morrilton High School
Position: Guard
The recruiting process and Weber State's commitment to Kemp have lasted a few years. Kemp, a true combo guard who is comfortable playing on or off the ball, is known for having a high IQ and feel for the game of basketball. She knows how to get her teammates involved in the game and how to command the offense. She can be a dynamic scorer at all three levels and has a great mentality on the defensive end of the floor. Several power five schools were in the running for Kemp. The Wildcats hope that that she can come to Ogden and make an immediate impact.
Why Weber State?
"There are many reasons why I chose Weber State. I remember the first time I talked to the coaching staff it was like I'd known them my whole life. The whole process came naturally and I remember somebody telling me, 'when you know, you know,' and I knew before I even visited that Weber was the one. When I went on the visit it was like my home away from home; the team, the atmosphere, the scenery, the people, everything at Weber was like a dream school for me. I also wanted to go somewhere that I could help become bigger and I wanted to be part of an organization that was growing. I love everything about Weber State and I hope I can make a huge impact on the school and community."
Coach V's Assessment:
"Chey is special. She had an outstanding summer. I appreciate the fact that she believes in what we are trying to do and what she can add to what we have going on. She's a scorer. She can literally fill it up. She affects the game in so many ways. She can play the one, two or the three. Her mid-range game and ability to knock down the three is great. Her basketball IQ is something that – as a freshman coming in – she might be the most talented freshman that I've coached coming in."
TAYLOR SMITH
Hometown: Pocatello, Idaho
High School: Century High School
Position: Forward
Having attended high school in Big Sky country, Smith is no stranger to the conference. At 6'1", she's a lengthy forward who has tremendous ball handling skills and passing abilities – especially for her size. One of the key parts to Smith's game is her excellent court vision and capability to find her teammates. Her ability to rebound the ball and get out in transition makes her a weapon on any team that she plays on. Smith's unselfish nature and attitude will make her a highly-valued weapon in Weber State's program.
Why Weber State?
"I chose Weber State because I love the system and support the coaching staff gives their players on and off the court. Also being able to succeed with players and coaches that feel like family."
Coach V's Assessment:
"She brings a different kind of attitude. She's a 6'1" perimeter tall who can shoot the ball. She, too, has a great IQ. She came for camp and I had the chance to see her close up and listen to her talk to her teammates and check out her disposition. I saw how she can handle the ball. I thought she was the point guard, but she is the four and she was running things. So we jumped on her and it was kind of hard because her mom coaches in our conference, so we had to really dig in with her. We had to let her know what I believe she can do because she's also an outstanding volleyball player."
