Wildcats Beat Griz in Four, Round Out Regular Season

OGDEN, Utah – Weber State volleyball closed out its regular season in fine form with a 3-1 (25-9, 24-26, 25-23, 25-23) victory over a tough Montana Grizzlies team.
WSU played one of its best sets all season to open the match. Montana, a squad that was competing with Weber State for the third seed in next week's Big Sky Conference tournament, was held to -.069 hitting in the opening set and Weber State put on an absolute exhibition of near-flawless volleyball en route to a 25-9 opening set victory.
Weber State out-blocked Montana 3-1 and hit a stunning .414 in the opening frame. Emma Mangum had perhaps one of the best individual sets in school history with six kills on eight swings to go along with three solo blocks and two service aces.
Montana came out ready for a fight in the second set. The Griz out-hit the Wildcats .180-.091 – despite Weber State recording seven second-set blocks – and took the first of three consecutive deuce sets 26-24.
The Wildcat faithful in Swenson Gym were treated to quite the comeback in the third frame. A late Griz service ace gave Montana a two-point advantage at 23-21, but Weber State collected itself and stood firm. The following four points were the Baylee Bodily show. Bodily kill, Kate Standifird kill, Bodily kill, Bodily/Dani Richins block, and Weber State came from seemingly nowhere to take the ever-important third set.
With a 2-1 lead in their pocket, the Wildcats were on the cusp of closing out the regular season with a big win to clinch the third seed in the Big Sky Conference tournament.
Montana held an early 5-2 lead in the fourth set, but the Wildcats scored on eight of the next ten points to swing the momentum in WSU's favor. The seesaw set saw the Griz change the tide and take the lead back at 17-13. Another Wildcat run gave Weber State a 20-19 edge in the waning moments of the fourth. The two teams exchanged points to tie it at 22, but Weber State scored on three of the last four points of the match – punctuated by an ace from Standifird – to close out senior night and the regular season with a 3-1 dub over Montana.
Weber State (17-10, 11-5) clinches the third seed in the Big Sky Conference tournament as it looks for a historic threepeat of Big Sky Conference championships.
NOTABLES
-Weber State extended its winning streak against Montana to nine matches in a row.
-The Wildcats out-served Montana 9-6 and out-blocked the Griz 16-12.
-Riley Weinert, a senior who was playing her final regular season match in Swenson Gym, had the first kill of the match for WSU. Mangum, another senior who was celebrated on Saturday evening, finished the match with 10 kills, a tie for her career high in service aces (3), and a career high in solo blocks (4).
-Standifird was the lone member of Saturday's double-double club (42 assists, 16 digs)
-Brielle Rueckert's amazing freshman season continued with nine kills for a .364 hitting percentage.
QUOTABLES
"As long as we compete every play, I'll be proud of our team. […] I just wanted to bring the intensity on to the court. Everyone on the team had my back and it made things that much easier." – Emma Mangum
"I think (our seniors) are part of the reason we have banners in our rafters. It's not something that you can put your finger on, but also the intangibles. Riley is an incredible teammate and I'm just happy that Emma and Riley were able to win on their senior night and it's a big deal that we were able to send them off the right way. […] I just hope that we can learn from the good and the bad from tonight. We didn't play the cleanest game of volleyball, but I think the biggest thing that we consistently try to do is get our kids to learn from experience. If we learn to handle our emotions and our failures the right way, then today is a good day for us." – Jeremiah Larsen
