Wildcats beat Adams State in exhibition win

Five Wildcats scored in double figures in 88-76 win over Adams State.

OGDEN - Basketball was back at the Dee Events Center Wednesday night as a new era began. 

Five Wildcats scored in double figures as Weber State defeated Adams State 88-76 in an exhibition game prior to beginning the 2022-23 season. 

The game marked the beginning of the Eric Duft era. Duft became the 10th head coach at Weber State in May following 16 seasons as an assistant coach under Randy Rahe. 

The Wildcats knocked down 11 3-pointers and dished out 18 assists. 

Dillon Jones, a preseason All-Big Sky selection, started the season off with another strong game. He finished with 20 points, 15 rebounds, and dished out four assists with three steals. Jones was seventh in the country in rebounding and 10th in double-doubles last season. 

Another returner, Zahir Porter, added 17 points with four rebounds and three assists and was 10 of 11 from the free throw line. 

Several new Wildcats had strong first game performances. Steven Verplancken, a transfer from Southern Illinois, had 12 points with two 3-pointers. Keith Dinwiddie, a San Diego State transfer, also had 12 points with two 3-pointers. 

Handje Tamba, a transfer from Tennessee, started the game and scored 10 points and had three blocked shots in 18 minutes of play. 

Adams State jumped out to a six-point lead early on before an 11-2 run gave Weber State a 25-21 lead with nine minutes left in the first half. 

The Wildcats closed the half on a 9-2 run and led 44-37 at the break. 

WSU jumped out to a 20-point lead seven minutes into the second half before Adams State came back and cut the lead to eight. Weber State knocked down 14 free throws in the second half and was able to seal the win. 

WSU shot 43 percent for the game and had 18 assists on 25 field goals. The 'Cats also had nine steals and forced 17 Adams State turnovers. 

Weber State opens the regular season this Monday, November 7 at the University of Washington in Seattle. Tipoff at 9 p.m. Mopuntain time. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Washington Network. 

The first home game will be on Thursday, November 10 against Western Colorado.
