Keith Dinwiddie lead Weber State with 14 points. Home opener Thursday night against Western Colorado.

SEATTLE - Weber State dropped its season opener 69-52 at Washington Monday night as basketball officially returned for the 2022-23 season.

The Huskies had big runs to end each half and hold off the Wildcats, playing their first game under new head coach Eric Duft

Washington shot 47 percent from the field and held Weber State to 35 percent shooting. WSU was just 4 of 23 from 3-point range and was outrebounded 35-24. Washington also had seven blocked shots.

"We didn't play very well on offense and didn't make the shots tonight, but defense travels and we came on the road and were in the game the whole way," Duft said.

In his first game at Weber State, sophomore Keith Dinwiddie lead Weber State with 14 points on 4 of 7 shooting.

Another Division I transfer, Steven Verplancken, added 12 points and knocked down two 3-pointers.

All-Big Sky performer Dillon Jones had eight points, seven rebounds, and tied his career-high with eight assists. He had all eight assists for the Wildcats.

WSU was 16 of 19 from the free throw line but committed 18 turnovers.

In the first half, the Wildcats took a 22-16 lead with 9:04 to play in the first half after a 3-pointer from Junior Ballard. But it was all Washington the rest of the half as the Huskies closed the half on a 15-1 run and led 31-23 at halftime.

In the second half, Weber State went on an 11-4 run and cut the Husky lead to three at 41-38 with 13:07 to play before a quick 8-0 Washington run. The Huskies had an 11-1 run and took their largest lead of the game at 65-48 with 2:43 remaining.

The 'Cats played without Alex Tew who missed the game with an ankle injury.

Weber State returns to Ogden for the 2022-23 home opener Thursday night hosting Western Colorado. The Wildcats will play six of the first eight games away from the Dee Events Center.
