Wildcats fall 33-30 to Sacramento State in national showdown

Weber State is now 7-2 overall with two regular season games remaining.
The Hornets remain undefeated on the season at 9-0 and 6-0 in Big Sky play. The loss drops Weber State to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in conference action with two regular season games remaining.
Sacramento State totaled 431 yards and offense, compared to 319 for the Wildcats. The Hornets threw for 227 yards and rushed for 204 yards, while the Wildcats had 153 yards passing and 166 yards on the ground.
Two long scoring drives by each team in the first quarter led to a 7-7 tie. Bronson Barron connected with Jacob Sharp on a three-yard pass late in the first quarter for Weber State.
The Hornets scored a touchdown on a 48-yard pass, followed a few minutes later by a bad WSU snap on a punt that led to a safety and Sacramento State led 16-7 at halftime.
Barron found Justin Malone for a 14-yard touchdown in the third quarter, before another Sacramento State touchdown extended the Hornets' lead to 23-14 after three quarters.
The Hornets punched in a one-yard rush on the first play of the fourth quarter to take a 30-14 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff, Weber State's Abraham Williams returned the kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. It was his third 100-yard touchdown return of the season, all coming in Big Sky play.
The Wildcats added a 21-yard field goal with 4:07 to play to cut the lead to 30-23. WSU attempted an onside kick, which Sacramento State recovered. The Hornets made a field goal with 1:56 to play.
Weber State wasn't done yet and the 'Cats put up a 15-play, 78-yard drive in 1:34, capped by a one-yard touchdown by Barron.
But the next onside kick failed and the Hornets held on for the win. Sacramento State has now won nine-straight road games and 17-straight Big Sky games.
Barron finished the day 15 of 38 passing for 153 yards and two touchdowns, with one rushing touchdown. Dontae McMillan rushed for 73 yards and Josh Davis added 60.
Ty MacPherson had seven catches for 89 yards. On defense, Desmond Williams led the way with 13 tackles and one forced fumble.
Winston Reid had 10 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery.
WSU committed two turnovers, which the Hornets turned into 14 points. Weber State was 10 of 19 on third down conversions
Both losses for Weber State have come to teams ranked in the top two or three in the nation by a total of eight points.
Weber State will play its third-straight home game and the final regular season home game next Saturday at 1 p.m. against Idaho State.
