WICHITA, Kansas – Weber State volleyball's season came to a close in the first round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats fell to the Drake Bulldogs by a score of 2-3 (25-21, 21-25, 25-17, 24-26, 7-15).
In its fourth-consecutive postseason appearance, Weber State came out looking sharp and ready to go against the 26-win Bulldogs. A Drake kill gave the 'Dogs a 4-3
lead early on, but Weber State scored seven points in a row to take a commanding 10-4 lead in the first. That seven-point run was highlighted by a pair of kills from Emma Mangum, and Weber State kept its foot on the petal to run away with the first set 25-21.
A Dani Richins kill in the second set gave Weber State an 11-8 lead and forced Drake to call an early timeout. The Wildcat lead ballooned to 14-10, but the Bulldogs bulldozed their way back into the set. A six-point run paved the way for Drake to seize control of the second, and despite a late Wildcat rally, the 'Dogs took the second set to tie the match.
Weber State was nothing short of dominant in the third. Drake took an early 4-2 lead in the third, but WSU scored on seven of the next eight points to establish its dominance. With a 10-7 lead, Weber State won six of the following seven points to further extend its advantage and take an insurmountable 15-8 lead. A Baylee Bodily and Kate Standifird block capped off a late four-point run that gave WSU a 22-14 lead, and Weber State finished off the set to nab a 2-1 lead.
A big block from Mangum and Saane Katoa capped off a four point run late in the third set to give Weber State the first of its two match points at 24-22, but Drake's lethal offense flipped the switch and scored the next four points to force a fifth set.
The Bulldogs came out on fire in the fifth and took the set 15-7, and the match 3-2 to continue their best season in school history. Weber State (17-12, 11-5) saw its fourth consecutive postseason run come to an end.
