Steeplechasers and Throwers Kick Off the 2022 Outdoor Season

3/19/2022 9:52:00 PM | Men's Track & Field

The men's team sent several distance runners and some throwers to Sacramento, California for the Sacramento State Hornet Invitational this weekend and had some early marks to get the outdoor season started. Josh Trafny and Cody Canard finished one and two in the Javelin with marks of 193' 2" and 189' 2" respectively.

Jake Weather's placed sixth in the hammer throw with a mark of 167' 6".

Gaige Vielhauer finished sixth in the shot put with a mark of 48' 0.75'.

3000m Steeplechase saw all Wildcats finishing in the top-six! Jamison Wilkes led the way with a time of 8:55.90, followed by Peter Visser at 8:57.32, Bronson Winter at 8:59.60, Tracen Warnick at 9:06.45, Ty Davis at 9:18.48, and Carson Wilkins at 9:22.62. Wilkes, Visser, Winter, and Warnick's times all rank in the top-10 for the NCAA this season with Wilkes with the fourth-best time thus far.

Peter Visser finished fourth in the mile with a time of 3:54.83 and Bronson Winter finished sixth with at 3:57.73.

Coach Corbin Talley said the following about the performances:

"I was very pleased with the efforts all around. To have 3 men under 9:00 in the Steeple to start off is fantastic. Tracen would have been a 4th, but his lead leg hit a barrier with two laps remaining and he fell hard to the track. He still got up and finished which was a great sign. He was leading the race by 25m when he went down. I'm just glad he's okay—definitely showed once again how tough he is.

"Great race by Jamison to be 20 seconds faster than he ended up last year. At the time Jamison finished the race, that was the number one time in the NCAA. By the end of Saturday, he has the 4th fastest time in the NCAA.

"And a stellar performance from Peter to be under 9:00 in his first college Steeplechase is very rare.

"I was also pleased with the opening marks from the throwers. It is a young group who is working really hard and showing a lot of promise."

The Wildcats will be back in action in two weeks on April first and second at the Oregon Hayward Premier in Eugene, Oregon, and the Utah Valley Invitational in Orem, Utah.
