Big Performances in Big Meets This Week for Wildcats

4/2/2022 11:18:00 PM | Men's Track & Field

The Wildcat's were in action this week at a pair of meets with most of the athletes competing in their first outdoor meet of the season. Coach Corbin Talley said, "It was a great opening week for us. I know we had some athletes compete in Sacramento two weeks ago, but this week, the full team opened at either the Utah Valley invitational or at the Hayward Premier."

Utah Valley Invitational

Coach Talley commented that, "while the weather wasn't great at UVU we still took away a few really strong performances. Cody Canard and Josh Trafny both threw very good early-season marks in the javelin." Canard took first in the javelin with a throw of 206' and Trafny was second with his throw of 198' 7.75".

"Jake Weathers was only 2 feet away from our freshman record in the hammer throw," said Talley. Weathers finished second for the meet with a throw of 174' 5".

Three athletes competed well in the pole vault with Lachlan Burns placing first by clearing a height of 16' 6.75". Jed Smith and Parker Sagers both cleared a mark of 15' 5" to share a sixth-place finish.

Switching to the track, Isaac Tillett finished fifth in the 100m dash with a time of 11.25.

In the 800m Joe Corbridge ran 1:54.39 to finish second, Hanokh Gailson finished third with a time of 1:54.89, and at 1:55.25 Bryce Anderson finished in fifth place. Bryce Anderson also took first in the 1500m with a time of 3:56.94. Ty Davis finished just behind in third with a time of 3:59.40, Conner Cox placed fourth with a time of 4:00.85, and Gailson finished sixth at 4:02.17.

Wesley Kallgren had a good finish in the 3000m run with a time of 8:41.79 and a fourth-place finish.

The 3000m steeplechase was full of good performers from the Wildcats with a strong finish by Conner Cox in first place with a time of 9:23.59. Ty Davis ran a 9:30.29 to finish third, Taylor Knight finished fifth with a time of 9:46.24, and Curt Crossley finished eighth at 9:56.26.

When we get a chance to compete in slightly better weather conditions, we're going to see some real outstanding marks.

Hayward Premiere

Coach Talley was pleased with the performances at the Hayward Premiere saying, "we had a number of strong performances in Eugene. Bronson Winter and Peter Visser finished first and third in the steeplechase. Both of those marks should be strong enough to get them into the NCAA first round in May." Winter ran 8:46.58, and Visser 8:49.77.

On the performances in the 5000m Coach Talley emphasized that, "for the first time in school history, we had three athletes break 14 minutes in the 5000m. Christian Allen, Dallin Leatham, and Tracen Warnick all ran very well to dip under that 14-minute barrier. That puts them at number 2, 3, and 5, on our all-time list." Allen, Leatham, and Warnick finished second, third, and fourth for the meet.

Cyrus Rindlisbacher and Caleb Whitney competed in both the 110m and 400m hurdles and both posted PRs in the 110 hurdles. Rindlisbacher finished second at the meet with a time of 14.35 and Whitney finished fifth at 14.53. In the 400m hurdles Rindlisbacher and Whitney finished eighth and ninth.

"There is definitely still a lot of work to do. We are very focused right now on staying healthy and prepping both mentally and physically for the big meets to come," Talley said.

The Wildcats will be back in action this week at a joint meet with the University of Utah. Day one of competition will be at Weber State's Chick Hislop Track & Field at Stewart Stadium and the second day will be at the University of Utah.
