Wildcats Post Third Place Finish at Big Sky Championships

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Weber State women's golf team posted it's best finish at the Big Sky Conference Championships in 13 years as the Wildcats wrapped up the tournament in third place on Wednesday at Talking Stick Golf Club.
The Wildcats shot rounds of 293 and 297 over the first two days of play, and closed the 54-hole event with a final round 296 for a three-round total of 886. The 'Cats were 14 shots off the pace of the 2022 conference champion Northern Arizona, which shot 872. Sacramento State came in second at 878. Idaho, which entered the day in a three-way tie for second place with WSU and Sac State.
The Lumberjacks were paced by Ekaterina Malakhova, who claimed the individual title with a 5-under 211 (68, 69, 74). That ties her for the fifth-best individual score at a Big Sky championship. Malakhova was a First Team All-Big Sky performer during the regular season.
Sacramento State's Jennifer Koga, who was named Big Sky Player of the Year for the regular season, finished as the individual runner-up with a 216. Idaho's Yvonne Vinceri finished in third place alone, while Southern Utah's Pluem Yongyuan and NAU's Lorel Hayward finished tied for fourth to round out the top-five.
Weber State was led by Taitum Beck, who shot a three-round total of 4-over par 220 to tie for sixth place overall. Beck opened the tournament with rounds of 73 and 76 before closing with four birdies in a 1-under par 71 on Wednesday to vault herself into the top-10.
Beck was joined in the top-10 by Isabel Gutierrez, who finished in a tie for ninth at 5-over par 221. Gutierrez started the tournament with a 3-under par 69 in which she carded four birdies and added a career-highlight wih a hole-in-one. Gutierrez closed with back-to-back rounds of 76, but managed to hold on to a top-10 spot.
Jessica Zelasko shot rounds of 75, 73 and 74 for a 6-over par 222 to finish in 15th place, while Morgan Bentley added rounds of 76, 74 and 75 for a 9-over 225 and a tie for 18th to give Weber State four players inside the top-20.
Aerin Song made it five-for-five for the Wildcats in the top-25 as she finished in 24th behind rounds of 77, 74 and 76 for an 11-over par 227.
The Wildcats' third place finish is the first time since 2016 that the program finished in the top-four at the conference championships and is the best finish since a third place finish in 2009.
