Wildcats Close Road Trip, Fall in Four to Titans

FULLERTON, California – Weber State volleyball fought hard against the CSU Fullerton Titans on Saturday afternoon but finished up its California road trip by falling 1-3 (21-25, 21-25, 25-20, 22-25).
The Wildcats had a lead as late as 14-13 in the first set, but Fullerton strung five consecutive points together to give the Titans an insurmountable four-point lead. CSUF went on to win the first set by four points.
The Titans were able to establish a lead earlier on in the second set, but the stanza's final score ended up identical to the first set. Fullerton took a 2-0 lead going into a potential match-deciding third set.
Fullerton got out to a big 7-2 lead early on in the set, but Jeremiah Larsen rallied his troops and Weber State seized an 8-7 lead after scoring six points in a row, punctuated by back-to-back kills from the all-around talented Makayla Sorensen. The Wildcats had a couple more three-point runs in the set and were able to maintain control throughout the rest of the third, taking the set by five points.
In following the match's pattern, Fullerton was out to another early lead in the fourth set, stretching its advantage to as large as 7-2. Weber State, however, fought back to make things competitive again. A pair of kills from freshman middle blocker Brielle Rueckert highlighted a five-point Wildcat run and the 'Cats were right back in the set.
After a five-point run of their own, Fullerton extended its edge to 16-10, but the Wildcats came back with four points of their own, including two more kills from Rueckert's right arm. That was as close as the 'Cats could get, however, as Fullerton was able to regain control of the match and finish the fourth set by a tally of 25-22.

NOTABLES
-Sorensen set new career highs in total attacks (45) and kills (13). She led the Wildcats in kills for the day. Sorensen also added 18 digs to give her a double-double
-This was easily the best match of Rueckert's young career. She totaled eight kills on 11 swings (.727 hitting percentage), and added a solo block and two block assists on the defensive side of things.
-In addition to dishing out 36 dimes, Kate Standifird had a double-double with a new career-high 19 digs.
UP NEXT
Weber State comes back to Utah for a pair of matches against in-state opponents. The Wildcats will face off against UVU on Thursday, September 15, and return to Swenson Gym for a match against the Utah State Aggies on Saturday, September 17.
