New head coach Eric Duft and the Wildcats return five players off last year's team and has eight new scholarship players. WSU opens the regular season on November 7.
OGDEN - Practice is officially underway for another season of Weber State men's basketball. The Wildcats officially opened practice this week with familiar and new faces.
Eric Duft begins his first season as the new head coach of the Wildcats. He was named the 10th head coach in Weber State's Division I history in May after serving 16 seasons as an assistant coach under Randy Rahe.
"We have a lot of new guys but I think they have done a good job connecting with each other and I think they are a hungry team," Duft said. "We have a lot of high character, competitive players and I think they will play well together. We've had stability here at Weber State and I like the fact that we have younger and older players with a great balance of new and returning players."
This year's Wildcat team returns five players off last year's squad, led by sophomore Dillon Jones, who earned second-team All-Big Sky honors last year and finished seventh in the nation in rebounding.
Also returning is senior Zahir Porter, junior KJ Cunningham, and sophomores Dyson Koehler and Alex Tew.
Weber State welcomes eight new scholarship players, including four Division I transfers. Junior Ballard (Fresno State), Keith Dinwiddie Jr. (San Diego State), Handje Tamba (Tennessee) and Steven Verplanken Jr. (Southern Illinois) have all joined the Wildcats as Division I transfers.
Following an exhibition game on November 2, the Wildcats will open the 2022-23 season on the road at Washington on Monday, November 7.
The home opener will be on November 10 against Western Colorado. The 'Cats will also host Utah Tech and Saint Martin's in non-conference play and will face road games at Colorado State, Tarleton State, California Baptist, Cal Poly, Utah State and BYU. WSU will also play three games in the Vegas 4 Tournament in November.
The 18-game Big Sky schedule begins on December 29 and will conclude on February 27.
This conference tournament returns to Boise, Idaho and will be held March 4-8 at the Idaho Central Arena.
Season tickets for Wildcat basketball are on sale now.
