Weber State University and Wildcat Athletics have named Dr. Bryant Thompson as the new NCAA Faculty Representative.Â
Thompson is an Associate Professor of Business Administration in the John B. Goddard School of Business & Economics at Weber State University. He studies resilience, relational connection, and well-being. He is the past recipient of the Richard M. Alston Endowed Award for Teaching Excellence and the Nye Award for Outstanding Honors Faculty. He currently serves on the advisory boards for the Richard Richards Institute for Ethics and the Weber State Honors Faculty.Â
As the NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR), Thompson will work closely with Weber State student-athletes, coaches, and senior staff to provide guidance and support. His responsibilities will also include monitoring academic progress, ensuring compliance with NCAA and conference regulations, and promoting a culture of academic excellence within the athletic department.Â
"I consider it a great honor to be able to serve as the faculty athletics representative," Thompson said. "The two most important interests in my professional life are to help protect the good name of our university and to help enhance the well-being of our students. Our student-athletes are impressive: I admire their ability to meet the very rigorous demands of intercollegiate athletics while prioritizing academic success. And, they have chosen a great place to be a student-athlete. Weber State is special. As the faculty athletics representative, one of my goals is to help our student-athletes have the same type of experience I had as a student at Weber State. My experience transformed my life: I had professors and other mentors who knew me, cared about me, and motivated me to become a better version of myself. I felt seen and valued—and I discovered strengths about myself that I did not realize I had. That is why I chose to return to Weber State (after teaching leadership at the United States Military Academy at West Point) and that is why I applied to serve as faculty athletics representative."
"I am excited for Dr. Thompson to take on this critical role for Weber State," said Weber State University President Dr. Brad Mortensen. "His teaching and scholarship related to leadership and organizational culture will make him a valuable resource to promote the academic and athletic success of our student-athletes. In addition, his experience as a WSU student, alum, and professor positions him to effectively bridge the needs of Wildcat athletics and the entire university during this tumultuous time in college sports."
Thompson graduated from Weber State with a BIS degree in 2002 and has deep ties to the university. His great-grandfather graduated from Weber Stake Academy in 1906, his father, Fred, played and coached baseball at Weber State, his brother, Erik, played baseball and rugby for Weber State's club teams, and his uncle, Paul, served as president of Weber State.Â
Prior to returning to Weber State in 2014, Thompson studied at Cambridge, worked as a management consultant in Washington, D.C., received his Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from the University of South Carolina, and taught leadership as a faculty member at the United States Military Academy at West Point.Â
"As an organizational psychologist, I see a natural fit with my background and the responsibilities of the faculty athletics representative," Thompson added. "I feel fortunate to be following Craig Oberg into this role. Craig has worked tirelessly with an excellent team of administrators, coaches, and staff in our athletics department to build a culture in which our student-athletes can succeed. As a result, we are seeing our student-athletes achieve unprecedented academic success. I am excited to be joining such a great team."
Thompson and his wife, Teresa, are the parents to five children, Bry, Sam, Matt, Tess, and Hannah.
"We are thrilled to have Dr. Thompson as our new Faculty Athletic Representative," said WSU Director of Athletics Tim Crompton. "Dr. Thompson's experience and institutional knowledge will be a great resource for our student-athletes."
