Wildcats drop first game at San Diego Tournament

Weber State opened the Thanksgiving weekend with a 56-53 loss at San Diego Friday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
The game was the first of two games for Weber State at the Dana at Mission Bay Thanksgiving Tournament, hosted by the University of San Diego.
The Wildcats will play UC Santa Barbara or UNLV in the second game of the tournament on Saturday at 2 p.m. Pacific time (3 p.m. Mountain time) in San Diego.
On Friday, Weber State jumped out to a 17-11 lead after the first quarter as the 'Cats shot 57 percent from the field in the quarter.
The Wildcats had their biggest lead of seven points midway through the second quarter before USD ended the first half on a 12-2 run and led 30-27 at halftime.
The Toreros led 45-35 after three quarters before the Wildcats made a run in the fourth. The 'Cats cut the lead to two points with 1:04 to play before three-straight free throws by San Diego gave the Toreros a 3-point lead with 19 seconds left.
Kenda Parra made a layup and a free throw with nine seconds left to cut the lead to two points. San Diego made one free throw but WSU's 3-point attempt to tie the game was off at the buzzer.
San Diego shot 38 percent from the field, while Weber State shot 36 percent. The Wildcats made four 3-pointers and the Toreros made three. San Diego was also 13 of 16 from the free throw line and outrebounded WSU 39-24.
Jaydn Matthews led the Wildcats with a season-high 18 points. She was 7 of 12 from the field and also grabbed five rebounds with two steals and a blocked shot.
Amelia Raidaveta added 10 points on 5 of 9 shooting and Kendra Parra had eight points with six assists and three steals.
