Wildcats fall 56-55 in season opener at Utah Valley

11/6/2023 10:01:00 PM | Women's Basketball

OREM - Weber State opened a new season under a new head coach and the Wildcats led for much of the game before Utah Valley pulled away to knock off the Wildcats 56-55 on Monday night at the UCCU Center in Orem in the 2023-24 season opener.

Weber State held the lead for more than 24 minutes but couldn't hold off the Wolverines late in the game.

Jadyn Matthews scored WSU's first seven points and had nine points in the first quarter as the Wildcats led 16-14.

The Wildcats led by as many as six points early in the second quarter after an Emril Lovell 3-pointer, but UVU rallied back to tie the game 31-31 at halftime.

WSU led 40-39 after three quarters before a back-and-forth fourth quarter that saw five lead changes and the score was tied three times.

UVU jumped out to a four point lead early in the fourth quarter. Kennedy Eskelson knocked down a 3-pointer that gave WSU the lead with 3:19 to play.

The Wolverines led by three points with 2:20 to play when Kendra Parra knocked down a 3-pointer that tied the game 52-52.

Utah Valley scored the next four points over the next 1:20 before a 3-pointer by Parra with less than a second left.

The Wildcats scot 38 percent from the field and outrebounded Utah Valley 44-21. WSU committed 27 turnovers and UVU recorded 20 steals.

The game was the first game for new Wildcat head coach Jenteal Jackson

"I thought we were ready to compete and didn't back down when it got tough," Jackson said. "We did a lot of things well, but there are certain categories that we have to clean up. There are little details we have to improve on with a new group and new coaches. It will take some time but proud of our group for how we competed."

Parra, a new Wildcat transfer, led the way with 13 points. She was also 8 of 9 from the free throw line.

Matthews finished with 12 points on 5 of 8 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds.

Amelia Raidaveta scored a career-high eight points, Emri Lovell added seven and Kennedy Eskelson had six points.

Weber State will be back in Utah County this Friday for a road game at BYU. Tipoff will be at 11 a.m. on Friday from the Marriott Center. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
