Wildcats Battle in NCAA Tournament Opening Round, Fall 3-0

Provo, UT – For the third time in school history, Weber State made it to the NCAA Tournament and despite a strong fight fell to BYU in three sets (16-25, 16-25, 25-27)
In the first set, BYU went on an early run which gave them a 5-0 lead over the Wildcats. The Cougars pushed their lead to 16-9 going into the final plays of the first set. Weber State came up with a couple of big kills made by Ashley Gneiting but BYU captured the first set 25-16.
BYU commanded the second set as they maintained a lead for the majority of the set and came out with another 16-25 victory.
With the match on the line, Weber State was looking to stay alive in the third and their efforts showed it. Securing an early 12-7 lead in the set and not giving BYU any breathing room, the 'Cats kept things tied or within a few points for the majority of the set. Tied at 19-19, a kill made by Kate Standifird gave Weber a 20-19 lead. Both teams were not backing down as they scored a point for point. Tied again at 25-25 BYU captured the third set 27-25 after two attack errors made by the 'Cats.
The third set proved to be the best offensively for the 'Cats as they recorded 11 kills from 36 attacks with 5 errors for a .167 hitting percentage.
Weber State was led by Dani Richins with 11 kills. Ashley Gneiting had four service aces on the night and Saane Katoa had five blocks.
