Fourth Place Finish in Big Sky Conference Championship

Greeley, CO – The 2023 Big Sky Conference Championship wrapped up Saturday afternoon at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO with the Wildcats finishing fourth in the overall team competition. There were several highlights over the four days of competition with some athletes exceeding expectations.
Jed Smith kicked things off with a championship performance in the Decathlon during the first two days of competition. Smith scored 6604, with his best scores coming in the pole vault where he placed first which vaulted him into first place, which he maintained for the rest of the events to earn 10 points for the team.
Reece Gardner took second place after scoring some major points with a first-place finish in the javelin and a tie for second in the pole vault, and second in the 1500 to seal his second-place overall finish in the Decathlon.
During day three, the Wildcats earned a second individual title with Xakai Harry's victory in the long jump, breaking his own school record with a jump of 25-08.25.
Day four had more Big Sky all-conference performances in the 4x100 relays with the team of Johnie Talamantes, G Kire Goulding, Alex Wheeler, and Rodee Brow finishing third with a new WSU #3 time of 40.64.
The final all-conference performance came from Caleb Whitney in the 400-meter hurdles who surged on the last hurdle to earn third place, coming across at 52.81.
Point scorers throughout the four days came from Alex Wheeler in the 200-meter dash where he finished fourth with a time of 21.02, a PR and an improvement on his WSU all-time ranking.
Freshman Rodee Brow finished sixth in the 400-meters with a time of 48.33. Brow also earned points from his eighth-place finish in the pole vault, clearing a height of 15-06.5.
Four Wildcats finished close in the 10,000 meters with Kevin Kirk finishing fifth at 31:26.37, Carson Horspool finished sixth at 31:34.23, Logan Anderson came seventh at 31:36.04, and Taylor Knight finished eighth with a time of 31:37.42.
Caleb Whitney finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.31, just shy of his personal best. Whitney finished fourth in the Decathlon to earn points as well, and in the long jump where he finished sixth with a new PR mark and new WSU #8 mark of 24-05.00.
Freshman Ryan Talbot finished eighth in the Decathlon, scoring 5371 total.
G Kire Goulding finished sixth at 14.41 for each to earn some solid points for the team. Goulding also finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.04.
Bronson Winter finished just shy of all-conference in the 3000 Steeplechase coming fourth with a time of 9:18.04. Ty Davis finished just behind Winter in fifth with a time of 9:19.29.
The 4x400 relay team of Brow, Gardner, Goulding, and Wheeler finished fourth with a time of 3:14.12.
This was the final meet for several athletes with some being qualified to compete at the NCAA West Regional Competition that will be held at Sacramento State University beginning May 24 in Sacramento, CA.
