Richins Breaks Record, Wildcats Cruise in Sweep of Panthers

9/7/2023 1:04:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – With a big serve in the first set, Dani Richins made school history for most service aces in a career as the Weber State Wildcats swept the Prairie View A&M Panthers on Thursday morning.

WSU never trailed in the first set after it got out to a quick 4-2 lead following a block from Brielle Rueckert and Kate Standifird. The Wildcat's tenth point of the match came in history-making fashion. Richins stepped up and served a beauty for her 174th career ace, making her the all-time record holder for most aces by any Wildcat in program history. Weber State extended its advantage to 12-9 and quickly rattled off four points in a row, featuring a pair of kills from Mia Peterson. With an 18-15 lead, the 'Cats scored on a pair of kills from Saane Katoa, an ace from Standifird, and kills from Baylee Bodily and Richins to give WSU an insurmountable 23-15 lead. Weber State closed out the first set with a 25-19 win.

Prairie View A&M finished off a four-point run in the second set to give the Panthers a 13-9 lead over Weber State, but the 'Cats fought back. A Richins kill – one of her match-leading 12 kills for the day – tied the score at 17. The Wildcats went on to take four of the next five points, including two more kills from Richins, and Weber State took the lead for good. Rueckert recorded a kill on an assist from Standifird to finish off the second set with a 25-21 advantage.

The third set was all 'Cats all the time. Richins started the scoring with a kill and immediately followed that up with another ace from the service line. Weber State scored three more to start the final set on a five-point run. A pair of kills from Bodily, combined with kills from Ashley Gneiting and Katoa capped off a four-point streak to double the Panthers' score at 16-8. With the score at 21-14, WSU won the last four points of the match to clinch the Wildcats' second consecutive victory.
