Wildcats Pull Out First Big Sky Win Over Hornets, 81-61

The Weber State squad looks ahead Saturday for a game against Portland State.
Ogden, UT – After a hard fought 40 minutes, the Wildcat women's basketball team earned their first Big Sky Conference win against the Sacramento State Hornets on Thursday evening by a score of 81-61.
Sacramento State jumped out to a 6-1 lead to start the game off, but six straight points from the Wildcats kick started them into gear. Aggressive offense and a layup by Taylor Smith put up the 'Cats up by one but a three-pointer made by the Hornets finished out the quarter in their favor with a 12-10 lead.
Weber State found their momentum in the second quarter and after a six-point run with a layup made by Laura Taylor the Wildcats pulled ahead 30-28. Weber State ended the half in their favor 34-33 over the Hornets.`
Quick into the third quarter jumpers made by Daryn Hickok and Jadyn Matthews plus a pair of free throws made by Hickok put the Wildcats in the lead 40-35. With that momentum, Weber went on a five-point run to then increase their lead by 10. The Hornets battled chipping away at the Wildcats lead however, it wasn't enough and the Weber State squad went into the final frame ahead 59-48. Weber State outscored Sacramento State 25-15 in the third.
Weber State had a strong fourth quarter outscoring Sacramento State 22-13. The Hornets couldn't dig themselves out of the score deficit and the Wildcats pulled away with an 81-61 win over Sacramento State and their first Big Sky Conference win on the season.
"Wins are very energizing they boost your confidence and the win couldn't have come at a better time. We needed it and we are excited to get it. I was proud of the work they did on the court tonight to get it done together and I think it builds the confidence to get us ready for Saturday and the rest of conference play," said head coach Jenteal Jackson.
"Jadyn had a great night, love her being aggressive," said Jackson. "That's something that we've been focusing on the last few weeks, just trying to get her to be more assertive and force the issue a little bit more because she's such a great scorer when she does."

Top Performers:
- Jadyn Matthews scored in double figures for the eighth time this season with 30 points and a new career high. The last time 30 points were scored in a game was four years ago for the Wildcats.
- Matthews had a season high 11 rebounds and five assists.
- Laura Taylor had a season high 14 points.
- Weber State had five players in double figures.
