Wildcats Drop Home Game to Bears

2/3/2024 2:16:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Back on the road, the Wildcats travel to Portland for a game against the Vikings.

Ogden, UT  The Weber State women's basketball team rallied back from an early deficit but couldn't withstand a Northern Colorado run as the Bears defeated the Wildcats 73-63 in an afternoon Saturday game at the Dee Events Center.

The Bears controlled the game from the start jumping out to a 12-1 lead early on and pushing the Wildcats to a timeout. After a pair of free throws made by Jadyn Matthews, the Wildcats started to find the bottom of the net. The first quarter ended 21-11 in favor of the Bears.

The Weber State defense showed up in the second quarter. Northern Colorado went scoreless for over two minutes before a timeout was called by the Bears with 4:50 on the clock. From then, Northern Colorado didn't see a score until there was 2:27 left in the quarter. The Wildcats out shot the Bears 16-12 in the second quarter and ended the half 27-33 trailing by six points.

Hoping to chip away at the deficit even more, the Wildcats offense and defense started to get on the same page. A couple of baskets from the paint made by Matthews and a few points put up by Taylor Smith helped earn the Wildcats 16 points in the quarter. However, the Wildcats missed baskets in the period allowed Northern Colorado to stretch the gap between the two teams.

Continuing to push forward, the Wildcats were rolling with under five minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Forced to a timeout due to Weber State's eight-point run, Northern Colorado had to regroup as Wildcats trailed behind by one, 58-59. The Bears didn't back down as they found two three-pointers and those six points gave Northern Colorado what they needed to secure a 73-63 win.

To Note:

  • Weber State is 3-7 on the season.
  • Weber State shot 40.3% from the field compared to Northern Colorado's 43.1%.
  • Three Wildcats were in double figures.
  • Jadyn Matthews recorded 14 points and six rebounds.
  • Kendra Parra earned 11 points, seven rebounds, and six assists for the Wildcats.
