A dominant second quarter propelled the Wildcats to a 62-53 victory over Vikings

Weber State advances to the second round of the Big Sky Tournament. The team will face No. 1 Eastern Washington Sunday afternoon.
Boise, ID - The Weber State women's basketball team defeated No. 9 Portland State 62-53 in the first round of the Big Sky Tournament. The Wildcats advance to the quarterfinals where they will face No. 1 Eastern Washington Sunday.
To start the game, Weber State trailed the Vikings early 8-0 until a pair of Jadyn Matthews free throws got the Wildcats on the board. A slow quarter for the 'Cats gave the Vikings a 16-4 advantage heading into the second quarter.
Finding momentum within the first minute of the second quarter, Weber State went on an 8-0 run to pull themselves to trail by only four points, 16-12. The first lead in the game came after a pair of free throws made by Darin Hickok, 22-20. Portland State got within two points late in the second quarter but WSU held a 30-22 lead at the break. Scoring 26 points compared to the Vikings six was what the Wildcats needed to boost them ahead of the Vikings.
Weber State went 0-15 in the first quarter shooting zero percent from the field, turning that around in the second the Wildcats went 10-13, shooting 76.9 percent.
Maintaining their advantage into the third quarter, the Wildcats tough defense kept them in the lead 46-37 heading into the final frame.
A 6-point run made in the fourth quarter kept the Wildcats out of the Vikings reach. Most points came from free throws, with Weber State going 6-6 and 5-13 from the field. Maintaining at least a five-point advantage over the Vikings the Wildcats closed out the game 62-53 and earned a spot in the quarterfinals of the Big Sky Tournament.
