Springfield, Mo. - The Weber State Wildcats fell to the UT Arlington Mavericks in a thrilling five-set battle on the last day of the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational. The 'Cats finished the weekend 2-1 overall defeating Saint Louis on day one and Missouri State on day two.
SET 1 | It was all Weber State to start the match, as the Wildcats did not allow the Mavericks a single lead in the first set. A kill by Rose Moore closed out the set 25-22 and the 'Cats headed to set two with a 1-0 advantage.
SET 2 | UT Arlington took control of the second set after a 4-0 run to put some space between the two squads. Quick to respond, the Wildcat offense put up three kills all by Baylee Bodily and Weber State was behind by one. Unable to pull ahead, the Mavericks finished set two 25-20.
SET 3 | The Mavericks were up by six in the third set before a Wildcat four-point run brought the score to 15-13. However, the Weber State squad could not pull ahead and UT Arlington finished the set 25-21.
SET 4 | Down by one and needing a fourth set win, the comeback 'Cats took a 25-20 victory and pushed the match to five sets.
SET 5 | It was close throughout the fifth set. The score was tied at 11-11 until the Maverick's Brianna Ford made a kill at the Wildcat defense. A service error by UT Arlington tied the set again at 12-12. Following a Maverick timeout, three big kills by the UT Arlington offense awarded them a 15-13 set win and 3-2 match victory.
Weber State showed a great performance in the first set of the match recording 18 kills and hitting .349 percent. Freshman Marly Pratt totaled 24 digs and two service aces. Three Wildcats were in double digits for kills, Bodily with 18, Ashley Gneiting with 17 and Jayda Tupea with 12. Saane Munyer led Weber State in blocks with nine.
"I am happy with our growth from last week," said head coach Jeremiah Larsen. "This is a good step forward in our development as a volleyball team. A lot of players stepped up and grew into their new roles as leaders. Now we need to keep moving forward and not look back."
