Wildcats fall in four to Bengals in Pocatello

POCATELLO, Idaho - The Idaho State Bengals snapped the Wildcats win streak Friday night, handing the 'Cats a 3-1 loss in Pocatello.
To open the match, the Wildcats and Bengals battled through a closely contested first set that saw 11 ties and six lead changes. Weber State tied the score at 24-24 with a kill from Brielle Rueckert, then again at 25-25. A kill then by Jayda Tupea, followed by a Bengal attack error, sealed the set for the Wildcats, 27-25.Â
That momentum shifted for the Wildcats in the second set as the Bengals flew ahead with a 7-0 run to start. Weber State called a timeout trailing 14-5, but the deficit was too much to overcome. The Wildcats were held to just four kills, hitting -.111 percent as the Bengals evened the match with a 25-8 win.Â
Regaining their spark, the Wildcats opened the third set with a six-point run to take a 10-6 lead. The Bengals battled back to tie the score at 20-20, and both squads went on to trade points through nine more ties. However, three straight points by Idaho State ultimately closed out the set, 32-30.Â
With the match on the line, Weber State came into the fourth set looking for a win. The Bengals continued to apply pressure and gained a slight edge at 22-20. Weber State battled to close the gap, tying it at 23-23, but the Bengals surged, using two kills to clinch the match with a 25-23 win in the fourth set.Â
