Weber State hosts the Junction City Jam Tournament this week

Weber State wrapped up a three-game road trip with a 79-70 loss at UC Irvine Saturday night in California.

The Anteaters held the Wildcats to 35 percent shooting from the field, and WSU was 3 of 17 from 3-point range.

UC Irvine jumped out to an 11-2 run to start the game before the 'Cats rallied back and took the lead midday through the first half. The Anteaters followed with an 18-4 run and held a 41-32 lead at halftime.

The Wildcats were never able to cut the lead to less than eight in the second half, and the Anteaters led by as many as 17 before the nine-point win.

Both teams made only three 3-pointers, and the Anteaters recorded nine blocked shots. UC Irvine also outrebounded WSU 44-41 and dished out 16 assists.

Three Wildcats scored in double figures, led by junior college transfer Edwin Suarez Jr., who had 13 points and six rebounds. Trevor Hennig added 11 points and six rebounds, and Viljami Vartiainen had 10 points off the bench. Nigel Burris had nine points, and Jace Whiting added eight points and a team-high four assists.

The Wildcats now sit at 1-3 on the season after three road games at Utah, Utah State, and UC Irvine.

"It was a tough three-game stretch on the road against very good basketball teams," said WSU head coach Eric Duft. "We have to tip our cap to UC Irvine. They are a great program and are picked to win the Big West. I was proud of the way our guys competed tonight. The shots just didn't fall for us, but we showed toughness. We just need to keep focusing on getting better every day. I'm very excited about what this team can become."

It's now back home for Weber State, which will host the Junction City Jam Tournament this week at the Dee Events Center.
