Wildcats fall 82-80 to Utah Tech

Weber State back home Monday at 2:00 p.m. against Lincoln.
OGDEN - Saturday night's in-state showdown had 15 ties and 15 lead changes, and Utah Tech scored last as the Trailblazers beat Weber State 82-80 Saturday night at the Dee Events Center.Â
Ethan Potter's layup with one second left sealed the win for the Trailblazers in a matchup of future Big Sky Conference opponents. Â
Weber State jumped out to a 9-3 lead, but Utah Tech responded with a 15-0 run to build a nine-point lead midway through the opening period. Utah Tech led 43-41 at halftime. The second half was back-and-forth the entire way with 10 ties and 10 lead changes.Â
Both teams shot 51 percent from the field and Utah Tech won the rebounding battle 28-29. The Wildcats knocked down 10 3-pointers and had 16 assists with seven steals, while UTU had nine 3-pointers with six steals.Â
Tijan Saine Jr. had a season-high 28 points to lead the Wildcats. He was 6 of 11 from the field, including three 3-pointers. He was also 13 of 14 from the free throw line, along with four assists. The 28 points are the most points scored by a Wildcat in a game this season.Â
Trevor Hennig had 19 points on 7 of 9 shooting, and he also made three 3-pointers. Jace Whiting added 12 points with two 3-pointers.
Utah Tech will officially join the Big Sky Conference in July 2026, along with Southern Utah.Â
Weber State will be right back in action Monday afternoon to host Lincoln at 2:00 p.m. in the final non-conference game of the season.Â
