Vartiainen and Threatt lead Wildcats to first round win

Weber State will take on No. 1 seed Northern Colorado on Sunday at 5:30 p.m.
BOISE - Viljami Vartiainen and Blaise Threatt combined for 56 points to lead Weber State to an 83-70 win over Sacramento State Saturday evening in the first round of the Big Sky Tournament in Boise.Â
Weber State will advance to take on the No. 1 seed Northern Colorado Bears on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. in the second round.Â
Vartiainen has scored 20 or more points three times this season and all three times have come against Sacramento State. He was sensational on Saturday as he finished with a career-high 30 points and knocked down seven 3-pointers.Â
He was 10 of 13 from the field and 7 of 10 from 3-point range.Â
Threatt finished with 26 points, seven assists, six rebounds, and two steals. He had only had six points in the first half but exploded for 20 points on 8 of 12 shooting in the second half. Threatt continues to be the only player in the nation averaging at least 20 points, five rebounds, and four assists per game.Â
The Wildcats shot 56 percent from the field and knocked down 12 3-pointers and held Sacramento State to 45 percent shooting. WSU also tied their season-low with just five turnovers.
Vartiainen came out hot in the first half with five 3-pointers. The Wildcats had an early 12-0 run and took a 16-6 lead after three quick 3-pointers from Vartiainen.Â
Sacramento State came back with an 11-0 run and took a 23-20 lead with 5:29 left to play in the first half. Weber State had another 8-0 run late in the half and held a 37-30 lead at halftime.Â
WSU made eight straight field goals, including 3-pointers from Threatt and Nigil Burris and took a 10-point lead at 59-49. The lead was never less than eight points the rest of the way.Â
