Wildcats sweep Murray State and SEMO to open weekend

Weber State opens the SEMO Invitational going 2-0.
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Missouri - Weber State volleyball began the SEMO Invitational this Friday morning with a 3-0 sweep over Murray State, followed by another 3-0 sweep over SEMO. The two wins improve Weber State's record to 7-1.Â
Weber State vs. Murray State | W, 3-0
Weber State and Murray State opened the SEMO Invitational with a tightly contested first-set battle. After the Racers jumped out to an early lead, the Wildcats responded with a 4-0 run to even the score at 8-8. From there, the teams traded points until Weber State utilized three straight Murray State attack errors to tie the score up again at 20-20. The 'Cats used an Ashley Gneiting service ace and Saane Munyer kill to pull ahead 24-21; however, Murray State answered to tie it at 24-24. With the set on the line, a kill by Rose Moore put the Wildcats up by one, and a Racers attack error sealed the set 27-25 for Weber State.Â
The second proved to be just as competitive, with neither team gaining much separation early on. Gneiting gave the Wildcats some momentum with four straight service aces, giving the 'Cats a 17-14 lead. Murray State battled back to even the score at 21-21, but Weber State held firm, closing out with a 25-23 victory to take a 2-0 lead in the match.Â
Weber State dominated the third set, securing a 25-13 victory to close out the match. Opening with a 6-0 run and never looking back, the Wildcats later added a 5-0 run to extend their lead to 18-7. With control, the squad finished off the sweep, taking the match 3-0.Â

With the score tied at 22-22, the teams continued to trade points until a kill from Kaylie Ray evened it again at 25-25. An SEMO attack error followed by a block from Brielle Rueckert and Ray then sealed the set for Weber State, 27-25. The second set was tightly contested as well, but the Wildcats began to create separation with a four-point run. Holding a slim 21-19 lead, Weber State closed the frame with five straight points, topped off by a Morgan Pratt service ace, to take the set 25-19.
The third set opened up tight, with SEMO trying to make something happen after dropping the first two. Weber State stayed competitive, pulling away at 18-12, but the Redhawks didn't back down as they tied the score at 21-21. Errors by SEMO and pressure by the Wildcats pushed Weber State over the edge as they closed the set 26-24 and swept the match 3-0.Â
