Weber State earned its first-ever series win over Iowa.
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Missouri - Weber State defeated Iowa in five sets to close out the SEMO Invitational. The Wildcats won the tournament, going 3-0 on the weekend as they also defeated Murray State and SEMO.Â
In a closely contested first set, the Wildcats and Hawkeyes traded points until Weber State gained a 21-18 edge. Iowa answered with three straight points to close the gap, but the Wildcats held on, sealing the set 25-23 on an Ashley Gneiting kill. Iowa started to pull away in the second set following a 5-0 run to give the Hawkeyes a three-point lead. Despite the Wildcats efforts, the 'Cats dropped their first set of the SEMO Invitational as Iowa maintained the lead to win the set 25-21 and tie the match 1-1.Â
An 11-0 run to open the third set put Weber State in control at 22-11, with three of those points coming off of Morgan Pratt service aces. Unable to recover from the deficit, the Wildcats earned a 2-1 advantage in the match with a 25-16 set victory.Â
Iowa took the fourth set 25-22 and pushed the match to a fifth. The Wildcats then used a 4-0 run to boost themselves to a 7-2 lead. Using that to their advantage, the Wildcats went on to win their first series match against Iowa 3-2 after a 15-9 fifth set win.Â
From Head Coach Jeremiah Larsen:
"A huge step forward in our development of a volleyball team. Beating quality teams like SEMO and Iowa will help us as we head into a huge weekend against the Utah teams."
