Wildcats fall to Vikings in regular season finale

Weber State will be the No. 6 seed in Starch Madness and will play No. 3 seed Eastern Washington on Monday, March 9 in the quarterfinals.
PORTLAND, Ore. - Weber State finished the regular season with an 84-60 loss at Portland State on Monday night at Viking Pavilion, a win that clinched the Big Sky Championship for the Vikings.Â
Weber State finishes the Big Sky regular season at 10-8 and in a three-way tie for fourth in the league standings. Montana wins the three-way tiebreaker based on a 2-0 record against Portland State and will be the No. 4 seed in the Big Sky Tournament this week in Boise. Northern Colorado will be the No. 5 seed, with a 1-1 record against the Vikings.Â
Weber State will be the No. 6 seed in Starch Madness in Boise and will play No. 3 seed Eastern Washington in the quarterfinals on Monday, March 9, at 8 p.m. in Boise.Â
With Monday's win, Portland State clinched the Big Sky regular season championship at 13-5 and will be the top seed in the tournament.Â
Portland State never trailed in Monday's win and shot 55 percent from the field to roll past the Wildcats.Â
With the game tied 14-14, the Vikings went on an 11-0 run and led 25-14. Weber State came back and cut the lead to five with 6:43 to play, but Portland State closed the first half on a 14-2 run and held a 43-26 lead at halftime.Â
Weber State was never closer than 18 points in the second half, and the Vikings led by as many as 26 as PSU shot 64 percent from the field in the second half.Â
WSU shot 38 percent from the field and were just 5 of 21 from 3-point range. The Vikings scored 50 points in the paint and forced 14 Wildcat turnovers. PSU also had 11 steals and five blocked shots.Â
Tijan Saine Jr. once again led the Wildcats in scoring as he finished with 16 points, along with four assists and three rebounds.Â
Saine finished the regular season leading the Big Sky in scoring in conference games at 20.8 per game.Â
Nigel Burris had 11 points and five rebounds, and Viljami Vartiainen also had 11 points with two 3-pointers.Â
