WSU comeback falls short in home loss to Vikings

Wildcats totaled 703 yards of total offense.
OGDEN — It was a game that saw just about everything. Weber State rallied from three-score deficits twice and finished with 703 yards of total offense, but it wasn't enough in the end as Portland State kicked a 41-yard field goal as time expired to secure a 44-41 win Saturday night at Stewart Stadium.
Weber State tied the game twice, but could never take the lead. The 'Cats trailed 28-7 in the second quarter and 38-21 in the third before coming back to tie the game at 41-41 with 1:53 remaining. The Wildcats finished with 488 passing yards and 215 rushing yards, but committed six turnovers with three interceptions and three lost fumbles, as Portland State scored 17 points off turnovers.
The Vikings opened the scoring with a 35-yard touchdown run, but Weber State answered with a nine-play, 75-yard drive, capped by Seth Rigtrup's 31-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7-7 with 6:46 left in the quarter.
The Vikings immediately regained the lead with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. A Weber State fumble on its next possession gave Portland State the ball at the Wildcat 18, and the Vikings scored five plays later on a 1-yard run to take a 21-7 lead.
Weber State moved the ball inside the Portland State 5 on each of its next two possessions but came away without points. The Wildcats were stopped on fourth down at the 4 late in the first quarter and again on fourth-and-goal from the 2 early in the second.
Portland State extended its lead to 28-7 on a 58-yard touchdown pass with 5:33 remaining in the second quarter.
Fifth-year senior quarterback Devin Brown started the game, but freshman Nate Dahle entered the game in the second quarter and helped spark the Weber State comeback. Dahle led a 10-play, 75-yard drive and found Marvin Session for a 31-yard touchdown on fourth down with 1:34 remaining in the half.
After a defensive stop, Weber State got the ball back at its own 20 with 34 seconds left. Two plays later, Dahle connected with Session for an 80-yard touchdown, cutting the Portland State lead to 28-21 with 19 seconds remaining before halftime.
Portland State opened the second half with a 42-yard field goal to make it 31-21. An interception on Weber State's next offensive play gave the Vikings the ball at the Wildcat 33, and Portland State scored on a 33-yard run two plays later to extend the lead to 38-21 with 11:03 remaining in the third quarter.
Weber State responded and drove 75 yards in 10 plays, with Dahle connecting with Session for a 27-yard touchdown on fourth-and-9. The two-point conversion failed, leaving Portland State ahead 38-27.
Tamal Johnson intercepted a Portland State pass on the next possession to give Weber State the ball at its own 48. Dahle found Session for 33 yards on the first play of the drive, and two plays later connected with Noah Kjar for a 16-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 38-34 with 5:19 remaining in the third quarter.
The Wildcats drove into Portland State territory again early in the fourth quarter, but a fumble ended the drive. PSU followed with a 61-yard drive and kicked a 31-yard field goal with 3:13 remaining to take a 41-34 lead.
Weber State answered once more as Dahle found Kjar for a 30-yard touchdown and tied the game at 41-41 with 1:53 remaining.
The Wildcat defense forced a three-and-out, giving Weber State the ball at its own 33 with 1:24 left. Dahle rushed for 21 yards to move the Wildcats into Portland State territory, but his pass on third-and-9 from the 40 was intercepted with 16 seconds remaining and returned to the Weber State 45.
Portland State gained 21 yards on two rushing plays, then connected on a 41-yard field goal as time expired for the 44-41 win.
Dahle finished 15 of 27 passing for 338 yards with five touchdowns and also rushed for 72 yards.
Session had five catches for a career-high 175 yards and three touchdowns, including scoring receptions of 31, 80, and 27 yards. Kjar finished with nine catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Robert Young added three catches for 70 yards, including a 65-yard reception, while Kolby Howard had two catches for 55 yards.
The 'Cats were without Spencer Ferguson, but Omar Shah led the rushing attack with 76 yards on 13 carries. Dahle added 72 yards, while Rigtrup rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown.
Da'Veon Ross led WSU's defense with 13 tackles, while Kevin Johnson had 10 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and half a sack. Zion Finau recorded a sack and forced a fumble, and Raimoana Tinirauarii recovered the fumble. Johnson, Ashden Oberg, Mapa Vaenuku, and Tinirauarii also combined on two additional sacks.
Weber State had 26 first downs and averaged 8.4 yards per play. The Wildcats were 4 of 6 on fourth down but converted just 2 of 14 third downs and scored on one of four red-zone opportunities. Portland State finished with 409 yards of offense, including 248 rushing yards.
The Wildcats fell to 2-3 overall, and 1-1 in Big Sky play.
WSU is back on the road next Saturday at Cal Poly, before returning home to host Idaho and Idaho State on October 10 and 17.

- The 703 yards of offense is the sixth most in a game in Weber State history and is the most since WSU had 687 yards in the 73-68 win over Portland State in 2007.
- Marvin Session is the first Wildcat with three receiving touchdowns in a game since Jacob Sharp had three in 2023 at Cal Poly.
- The 175 receiving yards by Session are the most yards by a Wildcat receiver since Cameron Livingston in 2014.
- Dahle is the first WSU quarterback to throw for five touchdowns since Richie Munoz in 2003 at Cal Poly.
- The 338 passing yards are the most by a Wildcat since Munoz in 2024 at Montana.
