Wildcat rally falls short in five-set loss at Baskersfield

Weber State rallied from a two-set deficit but came up short in a five-set loss at Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday night.Â
The Roadrunners defeated the Wildcats 25-14, 25-17, 18-25, 25-27, 15-11. It's Weber State's first loss of the season after winning the first four matches of the year.
Tennille Gonder led Weber State with 17 kills and hit .262, while Rose Moore added 14 kills and Lexie Carlson finished with 13. Stacia Barker had four kills on six attacks and finished with five blocks.
Morgan Pratt finished with 35 assists and eight digs, while Marly Pratt had a team-high 13 digs. Katelynn Albano added 12 digs.
Cal State Bakersfield took control of the opening set after the teams were tied 5-5. The Roadrunners built an 11-7 lead and later scored six straight points to extend the advantage to 19-11 before taking the set 25-14. Weber State was held to eight kills and hit .042 in the first set.
Bakersfield carried the momentum into the second set and jumped out to a 6-1 lead. Weber State rallied and pulled even at 17-17, but the Roadrunners responded by scoring the final eight points of the set for a 25-17 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Wildcats responded in the third set. Weber State scored four straight points to take an early 5-1 lead and later used another run to build an 18-12 advantage. The Wildcats led 21-16 before scoring four of the final six points to take the set 25-18 and extend the match.
The fourth set featured 11 ties and seven lead changes. Weber State trailed 17-14 before scoring six straight points, including two kills each from Moore and Gonder, to take a 20-17 lead. Bakersfield battled back and eventually had a match point at 25-24, but the Wildcats answered. After an attack error tied the set, Gonder put Weber State ahead with a kill, and another Bakersfield attack error gave the Wildcats the 27-25 win. Weber State had 18 kills and hit .300 in the fourth set.
In the fifth, the teams were tied 2-2 before Bakersfield scored four of the next five points to take a 6-3 lead. Weber State pulled within three at 10-7 and later scored three straight points to cut the lead to 14-11, but the Roadrunners scored the final point for the 15-11 victory.
Weber State finished with 51 kills and hit .167 for the match, with eight team blocks and three service aces. Bakersfield hit .232 with 54 kills, 13 blocks and nine service aces.
The Wildcats next head to the Nevada Tournament next weekend, where they will play Nevada and Kansas State.Â
