Alex Gerke
Alex Gerke
Back to oversee the Wildcat offensive line is Alex Gerke. Gerke will also serve as the assistant head coach working closely with Coach McBride and Coach McGiven in game plan preparation.

Gerke’s coaching influence was immediately felt in the program during the 2006 season as three of his linemen earned All-Big Sky Conference honors. DAVID HALE (OT) was named First Team All-Big Sky. Chad Glover (OC) and Dimitri Tsoumpas (OG) were accorded Honorable Mention honors.

Gerke has a wide variety of experience in the coaching profession, ranging from high school level to the professional ranks. Several of the players he’s coached throughout his 20-year career have signed professional contracts and earned All-America awards. Some of the more prominent players include Jordan Gross (OT, University of Utah) who was a first round draft choice of the Carolina Panthers and the Outland Trophy runner-up. Glen Parker (OL, Golden West JC) who earned All-America honors at Arizona then played for the New York Giants, Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs. Alfred Pupunu (South High, Salt Lake City, Utah) who played in the Super Bowl with the San Diego Chargers and also played for the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Giants. Pupunu led NCAA Division I-AA in receiving (93 catches) at Weber State University during the 1991 season. Vince Bonham (OC, Golden West) earned junior college All-America honors and played at Mississippi and Daniel Westmoreland (TE, Golden West) who played at Mississippi as well and Dustin Kroeker (OL, Cal Poly) who was an NCAA Division I-AA Independent Team All-America selectee in 2000.

A native of Westminster, California Gerke was a two-year starter along the offensive line at Golden West JC in 1980 and 1981. In 1982 he signed to play football at the University of Utah under Coach Chuck Stobart. It was at Utah where his relationship with Coach Ron McBride began. McBride was Gerke’s position coach.

Gerke got his first taste of the coaching ranks in 1985 at South High in Salt Lake City under head coach Bud Murray serving as the offensive and defensive line coach for the Cubs.

In 1986 he returned to his junior college alma mater, Golden West, to serve as the assistant offensive line coach and served as the weight training coach as well for head coach Ray Shackleford. One of the players he coached during that period was former WSU offensive guard Mike Hopper.

Gerke returned to the state of Utah in August of 1994 to serve one season as the offensive and defensive line coach at East High School in Salt Lake City under Coach Keiko Georgalis.

In the Spring of 1995, Gerke left to serve as a guest coach on the offensive line for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. He returned to Utah in the Fall as the offensive line and defensive line coach for coach John Lamborn at Hunter High School in Salt Lake City where he served for three seasons.

Coach Ron McBride asked Gerke to come and serve as a graduate assistant coach for the Utes in the Summer of 1998. He specifically was in charge of coaching the offensive tackles and tight ends. During his two seasons (1998, 1999) Gerke coached offensive tackle Josh Cochran who was named second team All-WAC and Doug Kaufusi who later earned first team All-Mountain West Conference during Gerke’s second stint with the Utes in 2001 and 2002.

The state of California beckoned Gerke back again in 2000, this time to serve as the offensive line coach of the Cal Poly Mustangs in San Luis Obispo, California. Gerke’s offensive line blocked for an offense, led by quarterback Seth Burford, that ranked 15th in Division I-AA in passing yards per game. Burford was sixth in the nation, individually, in passing efficiency.

In 2001 Coach McBride asked Gerke to return to the University of Utah to serve as the full-time offensive line coach for the Utes working specifically with the tackles and tight ends. In 2001 the Utes had the 24th-best offensive team in Division I-A and allowed just five quarterback sacks the entire season. Doug Kaufusi and Jordan Gross earned First Team All-Mountain West Conference honors and tight end Mike Richardson was Honorable Mention. In 2002, Gross was First Team All-MWC and the Outland Trophy runner-up for the most outstanding offensive lineman in Division I-A.

McBRIDE ON GERKE: "Alex is a great addition to our staff. He has a thorough knowledge of offensive line play and coaches his players with passion, dedication and enthusiasm. He demands the best of his players each and every play whether it be in practice or in a game situation."
