The 2019 season was the second season for Dave Schramm as an assistant coach and the offensive coordinator for Weber State football. He also coached the quarterbacks at Weber State.
In 2019, he helped guide Weber State to a third-straight Big Sky title and a trip to the FCS Semifinals for the first time in program history. WSU finished with an 11-4 record and finished the season ranked third in the nation, the highest ranking in school history.
WSU sophomore Josh Davis earned All-America honors and All-Big Sky first-team honors for the second-straight season.
In 2018, Schramm was part of the Wildcat team that won its second-straight Big Sky title and advanced to the FCS Playoff Quarterfinals. The Wildcats also were ranked as high as third in the nation, the highest ranking in school history.
Under his guidance, the Wildcat offense had four offensive players earn All-America honors in 2018. In addition, Wildcat freshman running back Josh Davis won the Jerry Rice Award and was named the National Freshman of the Year, as well as the Utah Male Collegiate Athlete of the Year.
Schramm spent four seasons (2012-15) as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Fresno State. In Schramm’s system, the Bulldogs ranked as one of the top offenses in the nation in several categories. Schramm also coached All-American and Oakland Raiders star Derek Carr for two seasons at Fresno State. Fresno State led the nation in passing in 2013 and was third in the nation in total offense in 2013. He was also a finalist for the Broyles Award in 2013, given to the nation’s top assistant coach.
He coached seven offensive players to the NFL and had three players earn All-American honors during his time at Fresno State, in addition to eight All-Mountain West first-team selections and 19 players that earned All-Conference honors.
Prior to coaching at Fresno State, Schramm spent seven seasons (2005-11) as an assistant coach at the University of Utah where he coached alongside Jay Hill. He was the offensive coordinator with the Utes in 2009 and the co-offensive coordinator in 2010. Utah averaged 33.1 points per game in 2010 and 29.1 a game in 2009. He also coached running backs, quarterbacks and tight ends and served as the recruiting coordinator during his time at Utah. He coached current WSU assistant coach Quinton Ganther during his time with the Utes.
Schramm also has experience coaching in the Big Sky. He spent the 2003 and 2004 seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Montana. He coached the offensive line and tight ends for the Grizzlies and was part of the 2004 Montana team that finished 12-3 and advanced to the NCAA Division I-AA championship game.
He also spent 12 seasons from 1990-2001, coaching at San Diego State where he was the recruiting coordinator, while also coaching the offensive line, safeties, tight ends and running backs. He spent one season coaching at Southwest Texas State in 2002, where he was the assistant head coach and running backs coach.
A native of San Diego, Schramm was a college quarterback at Cornell (Iowa) and Grossmont Junior College before playing at Adams State in Colorado. As a freshman at Cornell, he led all of Division III in touchdown passes and helped the team to a No. 1 national ranking in total offense.
His first coaching job was at Patrick Henry High School in San Diego where he was an assistant coach from 1984-87. He began his college coaching career at Austin Peay where he coached running backs and tight ends. He was also a graduate assistant coach at Nebraska in 1989 where he coached the secondary.
Schramm earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from San Diego State in 1988. He and his wife Bonnie have two twin sons, D.J. and Dusty.
