Under Bailey’s watchful eye nine Bobcats earned First Team All-Big Sky honors in the last four seasons with four claiming All-America honors. A Bobcat earned the league’s Newcomer of the Year twice (Travis Lulay, 2002, and Rick Gatewood, 2004). A third, Michael Jefferson, earned national player-of-the-week honors twice during his campaign at MSU. During Bailey’s tenure, Bobcats players account for the school’s top rushing season, five of the top eight passing seasons, and three of the top six receiving seasons.
While Bailey is well-traveled as a college coach, his roots lie in the Big Sky. He played quarterback at Portland State when the Vikings ruled the Division II scene in the Northwest, and followed PSU head coach Pokey Allen to Boise State. Bailey was an assistant during BSU’s revival in the mid-90s, an effort which eventually led to the Broncos’ status as a Division I-A top 25 regular in the 21st century.
Bailey came to MSU in 2001 after two years as offensive coordinator at Cal Poly (1999-2000), where he mentored three future NFL players, including quarterback Seth Burford, who broke all of that school’s season passing records, and All-America receivers Kasim Osgood and Adam Herzing. A member of that 2000 staff at Cal Poly was current WSU assistant head coach and offensive line coach, Alex Gerke. Previously, Bailey was offensive coordinator at Cheyney (PA) University in 1998, and was quarterbacks and receivers coach at Shepherd (WV) College in 1997. While at Shepherd, the Rams were 9-1 and won the conference title, and quarterback Chad Broadwater was 10th in Division II passing efficiency.
Bailey was a prot?g? of former Boise State and Portland State coach Pokey Allen. Bailey played for Allen at PSU in 1989 and ?90, and stayed on as wide receivers coach in ?91 and ?92. In 1993, Bailey followed Allen to Boise State, coaching receivers until ?96. He was part of the coaching staff in 1994, when the Broncos advanced to the Division I-AA National Championship Game. The Vancouver, WA, native played at Wenatchee (WA) Valley Junior College in 1987 and ?88. Bailey and his wife, Lisa, have three sons and a daughter - Cooper, 6, Dalton, 4 and Wyatt, 2; and Izabell, 6 months.
Players coached: All-America WRs Alan Boshma (PSU, 1991-92), Derrick Baldwin (PSU, 1991-92), Ryan Ikebe (BSU, 1993-94), and Kasim Osgood (CP, 1999-2000); All-America QB Seth Burford (CP, 1999-2000); All-Big Sky QB Travis Lulay (2002-05), WR Rick Gatewood (2004-05), and WR Mike Jefferson (2006).
McBride On BAILEY: "We were extremely fortunate to get Coach Bailey when we did. He brings a wealth of experience to our program. He’s been at several different schools on several different levels so he’s been exposed to a lot of football knowledge from many sources. The aspect which is most impressive about him is that where ever he’s been, the program experience success. He’s really positive in everything he does and I look forward to having him on the staff."
