The 2021 season was the 10th season overall for Matt Hammer as an assistant coach at Weber State. It was his second stint a WSU. He He rejoined the WSU staff in 2019 and in February 2020, was named offensive coordinator with the Wildcats. He spent the spring 2021 and the fall 2021 seasons as the offensive coordinator and also coached the Wildcat quarterbacks.Â
In his second stint at Weber State, Hammer helped guide the Wildcats to two Big Sky titles and two trips to the FCS Playoffs.Â
During the 2021 season, Hammer coached three players who earned Big Sky All-Conference honors. Senior Rashid Shaheed earned All-Big Sky honors as wide receiver and kick returner, along with offensive lineman Noah Atagi and tight end Hayden Meacham. Â
In the spring 2021 season, Weber State finished 5-1 and captured its fourth straight conference title, including the first outright title in school history with a perfect 5-0 Big Sky record. The Wildcats were ranked as high as second in the nation during the season, the highest ranking in school history.   Â
He was part of the Wildcat staff in 2019 where he coached the inside linebackers and helped lead the Wildcats to a third-straight Big Sky title, a trip to the FCS Semifinals and a third-place national ranking. Â
This is Hammer’s second stint as at Weber State and his second time as the offensive coordinator. He spent seven seasons from 2006-12 as an assistant with the Wildcats, including four years as the offensive coordinator from 2009-12 under head coaches Ron McBride and Jody Sears.Â
During his first stint at Weber State, he coached several All-Americans including Cameron Higgins, Trevyn Smith, Tim Toone, Bo Bolen, Vai Tafuna, JC Oram and Joe Collins. He has coached multiple positions at Weber State and began his career in 2006 as a graduate assistant working with the linebackers. He became a full-time assistant in 2007 and coached wide receivers and running backs, including coaching Smith who was a four-time All-Big Sky first-team selection and All-American. Hammer was part of the Wildcat team that won the 2008 Big Sky title and advanced to the FCS Playoffs in 2008 and 2009. Â
He returned to Weber State in January 2019 after spending six seasons as the head coach at Weber High School. In his time with the Warriors, he led Weber to back-to-back unbeaten Region 1 titles and two appearances in the Utah 6A Quarterfinals. He was named the 6A Coach of the Year in 2017 and twice named the region Coach of the Year.Â
Hammer graduated from Southern Utah in 2006 with a degree in Physical Education. He has a Master’s in Human Movement from AT Still University. He played both receiver and defensive back at SUU in his four seasons (2001-2005). He was also a standout prep star at Clearfield High School where he played Football and Baseball.
He and his wife Sheena are the parents of four children Jagger, Skylee, Cohen, and Roxie.Â
