    Assistant Coach/Wide Receivers
    Back for his second season of overseeing the Wildcat receivers is STEVE COX.   Cox replaced Don Bailey who left to serve as the quarterback coach at South Dakota State University in February 2008.
    Cox’s easy going, but demanding perfection, coaching style had a positive effect on Wildcat receivers in 2008. Under his watch, TIM TOONE set a Big Sky and WSU single season mark of 1,525 yards on 84 receptions and seven touchdowns. Toone is set to become WSU’s career leader in Receiving Yards in 2009. Toone earned First Team All-Big Sky Conference honors Second Team all-America honors by The Sports Network.  MIKE PHILLIPS emerged as solid receiver under the tutelage of Cox with 37 receptions for 696 yards and six touchdowns. Phillips earned Honorable Mention All-Big Sky honors.
   Cox brings a variety of coaching back grounds to the Wildcat staff.  He comes to WSU after serving one season as an assistant receivers coach at  Auburn University under Coach Tommy Tuberville. The Tigers were 8-4 in 2007 and won the Chick-Filet Peach Bowl.
     A native of Gardena, California, Cox graduated from Gardena High School where he was a standout wide receiver.  He played at Los Angeles Harbor JC for two seasons where he was a two-year starter. Harbor  went undefeated his sophomore season winning the Western State Conference title. Cox was named to the JC all-America team.
   He then transferred to San Jose State where he played under Coach Harry Anderson and during his two year stint set numerous Spartan receiving records. Cox graduated from San Jose State in 1968 with a degree in Physical Education and later obtained a Master’s in Physical Education from Saint Mary’s College in 1982.
   In the Fall of 1968, Cox served as a graduate assistant coach for the Spartans coaching receivers. After one season a SJSU, he left become the assistant varsity football coach at Leland High in San Jose for four seasons where coached receivers, quarterbacks and defensive backs.  In 1972, he was elevated to the head coaching position where he served for eight season producing an overall record of 54-27-1. He team’s won five conference titles and made two appearances in the sectional final game.
   In 1980 he found his way to the collegiate level serving as the receivers coach at Santa Clara University under Coach Pat Malley where he spent six seasons with the Broncos.
   In 1986 he left Santa Clara to become the head football coach at West Valley JC where he stayed for one season, then returned to Santa Clara for three more years before taking the position of head coach at Cabrillo JC in Aptos, California. In 17 seasons at Cabrillo he compiled a record of 95-86-3 winning five conference titles and making six bowl game appearances. Twice he was named the region coach-of-the-year. After the 2006 season at Cabrillo he left to accept the position at Auburn.
   He and his wife, Marney, are parents of a daughter, Jenna Congdon, and a son, Jeff, who played wide receiver at the University of Utah under Coach Ron McBride.  ... Cox was born on June 4, 1945.
