Former Wildcat player Tom Stackaruk begins 18th season with the Wildcats. Stackaruk coaches the tight ends for the Wildcats and also works as the video coordinator. In addition, he is the staff liaison to the Weber State Gridiron Club, a group of former players. The Gridiron Club sponsors a golf tournament each summer and the annual Senior Night Banquet each spring.
Stackaruk has worked under three different head coaches at Weber State. He began his coaching career with the Wildcats in 1994 where he was a graduate assistant and part-time coach for head coach Dave Arslanian. Stackaruk helped coach the offensive line that season, working particularly with the tackles. In 1997 he was elevated to full-time assistant coach.
In 1998 he was retained by new head coach Jerry Graybeal and continued to coach the offensive line and work as video coordinator. He was also retained under head coach Ron McBride in 2005.
Stackaruk is a native of Smithville, Ontario, Canada and came to Weber State in 1988 as an offensive tackle under coach Mike Price where he played as a first-year freshman. In 1989, he came under the guidance of new head coach Dave Arslanian. He played center and offensive tackle under Arslanian’s reign and earned three varsity letters.
In 1991, he helped protect record-setting quarterback, Jamie Martin. That 1991 team posted an 8-4 record and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs. WSU led I-AA in total offense, averaging 516.7 yards per game, and set a I-AA single game record which still stands of 876 yards against Idaho State. With Stackaruk’s help, Martin was voted the 1991 NCAA Division I-AA Offensive Player of the Year, receiving the Walter Payton Trophy.
He graduated from Weber State in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in Technical Sales and Physical Education. In 1992 he was selected in the third round of the Canadian Football League by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, where he played briefly before returning to Ogden.
Stackaruk and his wife Kelly have three daughters, Keatyn, McKayle, and Sarah.
