Veronica O’Brien returns to the state of Utah serving as an Athletics Academic Advisor for the Weber State Wildcats. As a former Division 1 student-athlete, coach and professional athlete, O’Brien brings a tremendous amount of experience of knowing how to help students and coaches succeed both in the classroom and on the field of competition. O’Brien has enjoyed a long and successful career in athletics, she brings over 25 years of Division 1 leadership experience serving as a Senior Associate Athletic Director/SWA, Associate Athletic Director of Academics, Sport Supervisor, Assistant Compliance Director and Head Division 1 soccer coach.
O’Brien brings a strong academic background to Weber State having served for seven years as the Associate AD at Utah Valley University for student-athlete academics and development. During her time UVU’s teams consistently earned team GPA’s above 3.0 and single-year APR single-year scores of 980 and higher. O’Brien has been recognized as Advising Administrator of the Year and Specialty Advisor of the year during her tenure at UVU and was given the Award of Excellence by the Division of Finance and Administration for playing an instrumental role in developing a nationally recognized model Academic Program. UVU was recipients of the NCAA AASP Grant.
A native of Barrie, Ontario, O’Brien was a standout midfielder for the University of New Hampshire from 1990-1993. While there, she was a three-time all-conference selection, all New England selection, adidas Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a Barbara King Newman Scholar recipient, earning a B.S. in Kinesiology. O’Brien was inducted into the UNH Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000. She later went on to earn Masters in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University, Irvine California.
O’Brien’s career was also highlighted by representing Team Canada as a member of the Canadian National Team from 1989-1998 earning a starting midfield sport for the 1995 side that represented Canada in that year’s FIFA World Cup. In addition, O’Brien represented Canada in the 1993 World University Games.
From there O’Brien transitioned into a coaching role, beginning as an assistant soccer coach at UNH for the 1994-1995 seasons, and was responsible for starting the first ever Div. 1 Volleyball Program as Head Coach of her alma mater. Her first Head Soccer coaching gig came in 1996 at the University of Texas at El Paso where she spent five seasons winning the Western Mountain Division Coach of the Year in 1998. O’Brien then took the reins at UC Riverside in 2000 taking the first UCR Athletics Program to its first ever NCAA Tournament in 2005 and winning Coach of the Year Honors while producing Conference Freshmen and Player of the Year.
Following the 2011 season, O’Brien left the sidelines and transitioned back to student-athlete services taking the position of Academic Performance Specialist at UCR. O’Brien has also worked as an Assistant Compliance Director at UTEP and served as the chair of the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Soccer Rules Committee from 2008-2010.
O’Brien likes to spend time with her family, dog Rocket and participating in all sports. For fun you tune in and sometimes hear her voice of “color commentary” for collegiate local soccer NCAA games.
