As a track and field athlete, Yardley was selected to the All-Big Sky Conference Team on four occasions. He earned all-conference honors in the 3-mile run in 1973, the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 3-mile in 1974, and the steeplechase in 1977.

Yardley set WSU school records in four events: 2-mile, steeplechase, 5,000 and 10,000 meters. His record in the 10,000 meters (29:42.6) stood for nearly 20 years. He was an NCAA qualifier in track and field and cross country.
