Box Score

LOS ANGELES (AP) -Lance Ortiz scored 16 points, including four 3-pointers in the second half, and Division II Cal State-San Bernardino defeated Weber State 71-59 in the first round of the CBE Classic on Monday night.

David Reichel added 14 points, hitting four 3-pointers, and Steve Gaston and Michael Earl added 10 points each for the Coyotes.

Kellen McCoy and Tyler Billings had 11 points each for defending Big Sky champion Weber State (1-1), which lost to UCLA in the first round of last season's NCAA tournament.

Cal State led by three points to start the second half, then opened with a 29-13 run to put the game away. Ortiz launched the spurt with consecutive 3-pointers and added another before Gaston hit two to put the Coyotes up 63-44.

The Wildcats committed 20 turnovers, but dominated the boards 30-19, including a career-high 14 by Arturas Valeika.

The Coyotes earned a second-round matchup Tuesday against either UCLA (1-0) or Youngstown State, which met in the late game. Weber State will play the loser Tuesday.

Cal State's game was considered an exhibition, as will Tuesday's game because Division II schools cannot consider nonexempt games played before Nov. 15 as regular-season games.

The Coyotes don't open their regular season until Dec. 16.

The winner of the Los Angeles regional of the CBE Classic advances to the semifinals Nov. 19 in Kansas City.
