SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Weber State women's soccer team saw its season come to a close on Friday afternoon in a 3-1 loss to Northern Colorado in the Big Sky Conference semi-finals.
The Wildcats out-shot the Bears 27-12 for the match, but could not convert until the final outcome was inevitable.
Northern Colorado scored in the 37th minute to put the 'Cats in a position where they would have to chase the game. Teresa Prais notched her fifth goal of the season on assists from Jessica Zimmerman and Laura Engel.
The 'Cats would fall even further behind less than two minutes later, as Marika Johnson headed in a cross from Prais at the 38:08 mark.
In the second half, the Wildcats continued to send shots at the UNC goal, and continued to get turned away by Bear goalkeeper Heidi Owen, who posted 11 saves in the match.
In the 87th minute, Zimmerman scored on a header from Megan Miller to put the Wildcats away. Natalie Blaylock answered the goal with a rebound score with just 16 seconds remaining to prevent the shutout. Freshman Lauren Parkhurst recorded an assist on the score.
Hayley McCoy led the Wildcats with six shot attempts, while Blaylock and Parkhurst each posted five. McCoy's six shots give her 176 for her career, moving her past Melanie Miller into second place on WSU's all-time career shots list.
Weber State finishes the season 7-8-3 overall. Northern Colorado will advance to the Big Sky title match on Sunday, where they will face the winner of the Portland State-Sacramento State semifinal.
The win by Northern Colorado is the first-ever against the Wildcats and will mean that the Big Sky will have a first-time champion this season. Only WSU, Idaho State and Montana have won the conference title in the 10-year history of the event.
