WSU Women Suffer Worst Loss of Season

The Weber State women's basketball team suffered its worst loss of the season Saturday afternoon, falling 79-46 to Chattanooga in the first game of the UTSA Wells Fargo New Year's Classic in San Antonio, Texas. The loss, the second straight for the Wildcats, drops them to 6-5 on the season.
Weber State opened the game with the first four points and held a 10-9 lead with 11:35 to play but that would be the last lead of the game. The ?Cats did not score for the next seven minutes as the Mocs went on a 14-0 and ended up closing the half on a 30-9 run to take a a 20-point lead of 39-19 into the halftime break.
The second half was all Chattanooga as the ?Cats would get no closer than 17 points. The Mocs led by as many as 36 points and cruised to the 33-point win.
Weber State shot just 35 percent from the field and allowed the Mocs to shoot 52 percent. The Wildcats also committed 17 turnovers and Chattanooga converted those into 21 points. WSU was also out rebounded 43-31.
The Wildcats were led in scoring for the seventh time this season by senior Sara Tuomi who finished with 14 points and was the only Wildcat in double figures. Tuomi also pulled down six rebounds. Ahkiah Hunter added nine points and career-highs of seven assists and seven rebounds.
The loss is the worst of the season for the Wildcats who were coming off a 26-point defeat at Utah last Friday. The 79 points is also the most WSU has given up this season.
Weber State will stay in San Antonio and try to regroup as they take on the host UTSA Roadrunners Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Mountain time. UTSA beat Miami (Ohio) 90-89 in double overtime Saturday afternoon. Sunday's game will be the final non-conference game of the season for Weber State.
