'Cats Fall 73-45 at UTSA

The Weber State women's basketball team lost for the third straight time Sunday falling 73-45 at Texas-San Antonio (UTSA) in the final game of the UTSA Wells Fargo New Year's Classic in San Antonio, Texas. It marked the final non-conference game for the Wildcats who will begin Big Sky play next weekend.
Sophomore Ali Thorderson knocked down a three-pointer with 6:44 to play in the first half to give the Wildcats a three-point lead at 21-18. But the ?Cats did not score again the rest of the half as the Roadrunners closed the half on a 16-0 run to take a 34-21 lead at halftime.
UTSA opened the second half on a 6-0 run and the ?Cats did not score until nearly five minutes into the half. Between the two halves the Wildcats went 11:14 seconds without scoring. The Roadrunners led by as many as 30 points in the second half as Weber State shot just 21 percent from the field in the half. UTSA was also a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line in the second half.
For the game the Wildcats shot a season-low of 26 percent from the field, shooting 13-50 from the floor. The Roadrunners doubled that performance by shooting 52 percent, including 6-10 shooting from three-point land.
Weber State also committed 22 turnovers in the game, the third most this season. UTSA turned that into 32 points off of turnovers. They also won the battle in the paint by outscoring the Wildcats 28-8 in the paint. Weber State also recorded a season-low five assists.
Senior Sara Tuomi led Weber State with 16 points and a season-high nine rebounds. The next closer scorer was Thorderson who came off the bench to add nine points, all coming on three-pointers.
Sunday's loss was the third straight time the Wildcats have lost by at least 26 points. They lost the two games at the UTSA Tournament by a total of 61 points.
Weber State concludes the non-conference season with a 6-6 overall record. The ?Cats will open 2008 and open Big Sky Conference play next weekend when they return home to host Northern
Colorado Saturday, January 5 at the Dee Events Center.
