Wildcats Drop Big Sky Opener

The Weber State women's basketball team dropped its Big Sky opener Saturday, falling 70-60 to Northern Colorado at the Dee Events Center. The loss is the fourth straight overall for the Wildcats, who drop to 6-7 on the season. It also ends the seven-game home winning streak.
The Bears jumped out to an 8-3 lead early in the game but the Wildcats battled back and took a four-point lead to 17-13 with 7:19 to play. Senior Sara Tuomi hit a jumper to tie the game at 21-21 with 2:25 to play, but from then on it was all Northern Colorado. The Wildcats failed to score the rest of the half as the Bears closed the half on a 9-0 run to take a 30-21 lead at halftime.
The second half was al UNC as the Bears opened the period on a 6-0 run and never looked back. The ?Cats never got closer than nine points in the half and the Bears led by as many as 19 as they picked up their first ever conference win over Weber State.
WSU shot just 34 percent from the field, their seventh straight game shooting less than 40 percent. UNC shot 41 percent from the field. The ?Cats also committed 14 turnovers, which the Bears converted into 20 points.
Senior Ahkiah Hunter led the Wildcats with 16 points. Tuomi posted her first double-double of the season and the seventh of her career, finishing with 13 points and a season-high 12 rebounds. Ali Thorderson added nine points off the bench.
UNC was led by junior Jamie Schroeder who finished with 28 points, one of three Bears in double figures scoring.
The ?Cats now have lost four straight games, all coming by ten or more points. This marks the first time the ?Cats have dropped their conference opener at home since 1999.
WSU will hit the road next week as they play at Portland State next Thursday and at Eastern Washington next Saturday.
