'Cats Fall to Vikings for Fifth Straight Loss

Portland State improved to 3-0 in Big Sky play and handed the Weber State women's basketball team its fifth straight loss with a 64-49 win over the Wildcats Thursday night in Portland. WSU falls to 6-8 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
The Vikings jumped out to an early 9-2 lead but the Wildcats responded going on an 11-2 run to take a 13-9 lead with 9:20 to play in the half. But the Vikings came back with a 7-0 run and never trailed again.
Portland State owned a two-point lead at halftime and led again by two with 16:30 to play when they went on a 14-6 run and the Wildcats, who were forced to foul late, never got closer than nine points.
Once again the Wildcats struggled from the field, shooting just 28 percent, the fourth time this season they have shot below 30 percent. WSU was also just 2-13 from three-point land.
Portland State out rebounded Weber State 48-38 with 27 of them coming in the second half as the out rebounded the ?Cats 27-12 in the second half. Weber State also committed 18 turnovers in the game and the Vikings had 11 blocked shots.
Junior Janie Rayback came off the bench with two season-highs to lead the Wildcats. She posted 13 points and eight rebounds and was 4-5 from the field and 5-7 from the free throw line. It marked the first time all season she has scored in double figures.
Senior Sara Tuomi finished the night with 12 points and has now scored in double figures in all 14 games this season. Tuomi was also 6-6 from the free throw line and pulled down four rebounds. Ahkiah Hunter added eight points and led the ?Cats with a career-high nine rebounds.
Claire Faucher led the Vikings with 19 points and Kelsey Kahle added 14 points and ten rebounds.
The Wildcats now drop to 0-2 in Big Sky play for the first time since 2000 while the Vikings improve to 13-3 overall and are on top of the Big Sky at 3-0.
WSU will continue its road trip this Saturday at Eastern Washington at 3:00 p.m. Mountain time. The Eagles will also be looking for their first Big Sky win. They are 3-13 overall and 0-3 in Big Sky play following a 76-69 loss at home to Idaho State Thursday night.
